Coming back to the M3! Need advice on black kidney grilles...

Hey guys/gals, I couldn't stay away from the M3 for very long… Today I put a deposit down on a Jet Black e90 M3. With my e92 Coupe, I went the Storm Trooper route, looks like this one will have to be murdered.

First things first, those chrome kidney grilles have got to go! I had the OEM black chrome on my e92 from **********s but one thing I noticed is on the side gills it seemed like one was darker than the other, and almost more of a gunmetal than black chrome. Not a huge deal since you couldn't see them next to each other but it still messed with my OCD a bit...

I'm wondering what will look best on the Jet Black, glossy or matte kidney grilles… and should I try to order from a different vendor?

On jet black, the gloss should look better Than Matte.

Is there a difference between "gloss" and the OEM "black chrome"? I'm picturing that black chrome that I had on my AW e92 on the Jet Black and I don't think it will look right...

I would go Matte to have a little contrast while still maintaining your all black look...

Yes there is a difference. There is matte black, the BMW Performance gloss black, then the BMW Edition black chrome. I have another option.... get full color matched from IND including the grills and side gills.

confused as ever on this… I like the idea of contrast with the matte, I also think gloss (like shadow line) would look good too. The "BMW edition" is advertised as Black Chrome, that is out…. I didn't really care for that in certain light.

I'd stay consistent with the shadow-line trim and get the gloss black. I have the black chrome. It's nice but if given a do-over, I'd probably just go with black gloss.

If you want to change it up and have multiple choices then plasti dip them flat black. If you don't dig it then use the gloss spray. Either way, you still have the base grills and can make them whatever you want while trying different things.

Ended up going with OEM BMW Performance (gloss black) from ModB. My gut ended up going with the glossy but who knows, may try matte down the road...

Is it bad that I am ordering parts for a car I don't have in my possession yet?

This. OEM fitment ftw.

The black chrome isn't too far off gloss black. Every so often the sun hits it right and you can see a little silver in the reflection. 99% of the time, you'll like it 100% of the time.

be aware though that the "black chrome" looks almost gunmetal-esque in certain light and in all the pictures you will see of it, it looks glossy black. I had it on my E92 and didn't really care for it.
