Make sure you use the correct sized drill bit for each gauge of wire.

It was easier than I was anticipating. Really just a few nuts and bolts with a few panels.

The whole harness is going to a pro who has done this more than a few times. I kinda know what’s what, but it should be pretty easy once it’s thinned.

Going to Martyn? Yeah less for him and more for you upon reinstall should there be hiccups.

One of the things I’ve learned about this thing, is most of the plugs are unique. I’m convinced the hard part is over.

That’s quite an undertaking!
Any idea on the net weight loss after the “Pro” goes through it?

Turned out to not be that difficult. Not sure on projected losses, but I’d be happy with 1/3rd of what it is now. I suspect that’s achievable.

I had Martyn do mine - Had him delete everyone that wasn’t necessary to run the car. It’s 24.2 lbs post thinning. Most of the weight reduction shared comes from all the modules, brackets, etc plus wiring.

roastbeef doesn’t look like you included the under side battery cable?

You can drop another ~ 5 lbs per side of the battery cable (chassis and under body) if you relocate the battery to adjacent to the dash. That long power cable is heavy.

Mine should finish closer to sub 20 with the battery relo. Also I’ve since deleted headlights and cooling fan, dash, as I’m running std alone ECU so not limited to tuner module deletions.

The underbody battery line is on the list of curiosities I was going to ask Martyn. I’m hoping to relocate the battery to the rear passenger’s side footwell. I don’t need the charger into the engine bay anymore either.

so a quick update on the direction of this car. i've been talking with alex about the electric power steering kits he has been putting together. he houses his in the driver's side trunk cubby area and there is no need for a cooler. this is appealing because i have a 2011 car, and would have to source an 08 power steering pump since i'm getting rid of the hvac.
so the cocktail napkin plan as of now is; get rid of the a/c compressor and power steering pump completely, which eliminates an entire belt, and two pulleys. i'll probably also get a "power" pulley and have the outermost [now unused] ridge machined off (you know, for weight savings).

as i'm waiting on the wiring, i'm going to shave off a lot of tabs. should be fun. i'm going to comission a few carbon panels to be made for the rear trunk, the hvac firewall hole, and the little hole where the a/c and heater core came through the firewall.

i'm also planning on getting the aluminum skidplate from bigjae1976 . hopefully he has the carbon "felt" pieces in carbon by then as well.

i've been thinking about the headlights and taking them apart to make them a little lighter... they have some kind of mechanical adjustment, but i'm sort of hoping the motor isn't a part of that. same with the side mirrors. going to take them apart and try to reduce weight. i already gutted the rearview mirror and took a few ounces out of it.

a couple more talking points; i was thinking about doing a radiator "while i was in there" but i've never had cooling issues, and i suspect it will be even better with the removal of the a/c condenser. i'll probably at least replace the upper and lower coolant hoses. i also want to take a serious look at the sealing around the coolers and make sure they are in good working condition and tight.

another fun thought has been making the side blinker "ducts" functional. i'll probably get a 2" generic brake duct inlet and hopefully sandwich a rubber sleeve between the inlet duct and the blinker duct.

So annoying that they are unique to the M3. When I did my 1 series I sold the Xenons and bought new TYC halogens from a 128, it was like 9 lbs per side weight savings and netted like $1000 in the project fund.

why not run carbon blanks with the oem projector and run a "oem" headlight sticker to retain the look. you'll have a light still. lol

that what my friend did on his car, he has cf headlight blanks and runs a REALLY convincing headlight sticker.

you wouldn't know unless you were told. i guess minus the lack of DRLs yeah lol.

Couple weight figures... we have the complete powere steering system, minus the rack and some fluid. Then we have the complete HVAC system forward of the firewall, the associated belt, pulleys, and hardware.

i've considered the HKG lights with turner headlight decals, but i'm kinda concerned about quality.

I've seen original HGK parts. They are strictly racing parts. Fit and finish are secondary and won't be perfect.
