How much performance do I lose with snow tires?

I bought the car and immediately put on snow tires (Dunlop 3D), so I haven't driven with the performance summer tires to compare. Just wondering how different it will feel.

The difference is substantial. Car feels floaty with snows. Solid with summers. You will be pleased

I have had the same tires (Dunlop 3Ds) for about a month now and I've been impressed. You definitely give up on dry performance - The DSC light comes on more often under hard acceleration but all in all for winters (rain, cold, sleet, snow, dry) its a perfect compromise. I even did a launch once and there was some wheel spin drama but I got a OK launch.

Can't wait to put my summers on again though!

Unless you are driving on ice in which cause you actually can move your car with the snow tires on ( vs. just spinning them with summers......).

Up where I am, you won't be able to make a corner with summer tires. You will just make an M3 sized hole in the snow drift on the outside of the turn.

also have the Dunlop 3D, good winter tires...

I get a vibration on the highway at around 80 with my Dunlop 3D snows and I find the ride to be a bit more harsh around town. I can't wait to put my summer tires back on but won't until April. You will be amazed how much better seated it will feel.

I think the Dunlop 3D is really good for snow, but it does feel a little sluggish and draggy on dry roads. I can't wait for the spring so that I can put on the 19inch wheels and summer tires.

I also feel that the steering is not as direct and responsive with winters on.

Sounds like more of a balancing issue than a winter tire problem, no?

I have the same wheels! I also miss my ZCP wheels and Pirellis... couple more months and they will be on.

Blizzak WS70 vibration on dry road

I have put on a set of WS70, only have had 1 minor snow storm so far. They performed well, but need to be tested in heavy snow storm and icy condition before I can comment.

BUT the biggest complaint is the vibration on dry road between 60-80mph. I had it since day 1. I returned to tire shop within 1/2 hour, they re-balanced (road force balance) for me and found 1 tire needing to rotate between rim and tire. Honestly it didn't help. Tire shop told me at the time the weather was too warm (10 deg C). They told me the tires will perform well after awhile.

After 2 weeks, I couldn't stand it because even my wife was complaining about the vibration in the passenger seat. It was embarrassing.

I took it to a different tire dealer and paid for the re-balancing (same road force type), and found 2 tires were out by 0.5g. It had a slight improvement but the shimmy still there.

The car (2008 535i) ran perfectly with my summer 245/40/18. These are 225/50/17 with after market rims with the plastic insert. Would that be the problem?

Any recommendation to get rid of the shimmy on these WS70 ?

I would suspect the "plastic insert" which I assume you mean the hub-centric adapter ring. I would also suspect that one or more of the wheels is bent. Did you buy cheap wheels for winter use? If so, there's a good chance one has bent. I have learned my lesson the hard way on cheap wheels. Not worth the trouble because they often bend easily. I typically install snows on my OEM wheels and purchase a quality forged wheel for summer use.

I thought of that too. These are brand new rims (4). The price is less than 1/2 of dealership, but OEM has the TPM sensors.
When I returned to them within the 1/2 hour, they told me the rings have no problems. Once the tires are installed, the rings play no part in the driving. They were there to aid the mounting of the wheels.

If there's any bent on the rims, would the road force balance show it?

If there's any defect on the tires, would the road force balance show it?

If it's the mounting (torque or something), they have been mounted the 3rd time be 2 different shops...

Someone explained that it is due to the characteristic of WM70 when they are brand new. When they become a little worn, the vibration should go away???? Is that a myth just to pacify me?

Do you mean the easy fix is the hub rings?
Did you find defective hub rings? or Just replacing all 4 of them regardless?

Solving this mystery will end my frustration and embarrassment.

My 219m's 3d's compared to my 220m's conti 3's float quite a bit during acceleration and higher speeds. The ar a bit better when it gets colder but the float is always there compared to the summers
