I have to smog my car and I cannot pass the obd readiness test. I was fully catless with a stage 2 tune but earlier today switched my stock x pipe on and flashed to stock tune. After I did that all, I looked up the BMW drive cycle guide and followed it. There was a bit of traffic during that time but I still tried to do some of the tests. I have Bmw Carly and android Torque app to let me know if I'm passing the readiness tests as well. I didn't pass, I drove home and figured that I'll just let the car sit for 5-6 hours and try again at night with no traffic. I just got back home after 2 hours of driving. Still didn't pass on the same 3 monitors:

Catalyst Incomplete
Secondary Air Incomplete
O2 Sensor Incomplete

These are the only 3 I'm failing. I did everything perfectly and still can't seem to get these to pass. Probably put 80 miles on the car tonight. Anyone have any recommendations? I need to smog ASAP as my registration is expired. Gonna attempt again in the morning, I know the drive cycle mentions that the car needs to cold start but after letting the car sit for about 5 hours earlier today I figured that was enough. These were my steps:

Turn car on and let it idle for 3 minutes
Speed up to 20-30 mph for 3-4 minutes
Speed up to 40-60 mph for 15-20 minutes
Decelerate to stop, leave car in gear and let idle for 5 minutes

(Made sure to keep radio and A/C or Heater on the entire time)

I had a similar issue on an e46 ZHP a few years back and the dealer suggested that I disconnect the negative battery cable for about 30 minutes. I'm not sure if something was hung up but that solved the problem and the car passed inspection.

This is the reason why I still haven't gotten a full akra exhaust on my E90. I don't want to be in this same situation every 2 years.

If you throttle up it stops the tests. Porsche 993s are really hard to get to set the readiness monitors, and I typically have to get on the highway and just do 45-50mph for 10-20 minutes to finish it. It is incredibly unpleasant to drive down the highway below the speed limit in a 993TT.

To get secondary air set, you need to start the car stone cold and literally just sit there for a while. I recommend waiting a couple minutes past when you hear it turn off.

With that many monitors incomplete, he can't pass anywhere that tests.

I believe that just resets the ecu and all monitors. I was thinking about doing a reset as well but idk if the monitors are close to being passed with the driving I did yesterday. Gonna give it another shot today and if it still doesn't pass just reset it

Edit 2:

Started the car up and let it idle for 6 minutes this morning. Went through some stop and go traffic on the way to the coast and did the 20-30 mph for 4 minutes and then hopped on the freeway and kept it at 55 mph for 20 minutes then came to a stop and idle for 6 minutes in gear. Still failing on same 3

Catalyst incomplete
02 Sensor Incomplete
Secondary air incomplete

These cars are a pain in the ass. Any recommendations? I reset the ecu before I left which I believe reset the monitors. Thinking of unplugging the negative cable from the battery for 20 minutes

Few questions, I'm going to take the car out again tonight gonna let the car sit for around 8 hours since a few shops said the car needs to be really cold for the cold start.

Can I leave my car on cruise control? 2 smog shops that do a lot of bmw's say to leave it on cruise control, that's how they do it. They also said to just drive like 30 minutes straight at 55 mph.

Never disconnect the battery when it’s right around the time to get the car smog tested. Not only it resets the monitors, it also resets the drive cycle.

I Followed the drive cycle from the link below. Look at page 2 and you have to be very precise and stay below 3000 rpm. There is a canyon back road about half a mile from my house so I made sure to drive around my neighborhood at low speeds first and hit the canyon at a steady 50mph for 15min. I had to do this routine at least 3x within a few days apart and then hit the freeway at a steady 80mph. It took me a total of 250-300 miles to get all the monitors check green for OBD readiness again. Having the Carly app helps a lot when you need to check the monitor status on the fly.

Good luck.

I don't understand why you'd go back to stock? Assuming your stage II tune kept all systems in "ready" status, you should pass as no sniffer is required in CA on modern cars. As long as the smog computer can plug into your DME and think everything is "normal" you're good to go.

The only chance of you failing would be visual. Is that why you went back to stock? In my experience most techs don't really A) look that closely and/or B) don't really know what to look for - if they see two resonators under that car they assume cats.

On the other hand, going back to stock should not be resulting in your current issues, so not sure what's going on other than drive cycles. But, again, in my experience, it takes only a few short drives/miles to set everything back to normal. Certainly not days and hundreds of miles.

I actually called and asked my tuner (Gintani) if the stage 2 tune mimics readiness test completed but they said it doesn't and there aren't any tunes that do and if there are tunes that do it's very few. They said it's an automatic 500,000 fine for the shop if they're caught. This is just for obd readiness, tunes cannot tamper with those systems

Cruise control is fine. Note that if you come to any long uphill areas that you may want to take it off cruise control and manage your speed manually.

Yes it turns out my ambient temperature sensor was broken. Ambient temp sensor detects temperature outside so I didn't think it has any correlation to the emissions monitor and it doesn't throw a hard CEL or SES light. Changed it and within 5 minutes the monitors all turned green. Scan the car and see if you have a code stored in the motor control unit, if you do fix it because that's most likely causing the monitors not to turn on

Awesome thanks. I cleared all the codes recently and aren't showing any now. Do you recall what code popped up for the temperature sensor?

You might have to let the dealer smog it. I doubt you will be able to get it ready.

Hard to change? I recently went back to stock too, and didn't flash my tune back to stock yet. Which reminds me.... I need to. Now I'm freaking out worried about this issue as well. Ugh.... pray for us. I love my car, but I really hate this part.

If you're not throwing any codes after you go back to stock you'll be fine. Just do a complete drive cycle, you can google and find some detailed ones. Once my sensor was changed it literally passed all monitors within 10 minutes. If you have Carly or have access to a kdcan or Bluetooth adapter you can download apps that have the function to view if your monitors are on or not.

As for the ambient temperature sensor, it's very simple. You have to remove the driver side fender liner and pull you'll see the black plug there.

There's a really simple solution... don't add features to your car that prevent it from passing SMOG, which isn't that hard. Really easy in fact.
