Very loud buzzing noise - idrive reboot??

It happened 3 times already. I was driving at normal highway speed, listening to music form the hard drive when all of a sudden there was very loud buzzing noise and the idrive rebooted itslef!!?? The sound was a form of electic interference noise from the speakers but really loud.
Any idea?? Any similar experience?
Thanks

I think I know what you're talking about, since I had the same experience a few weeks ago. And you're right, it was a loud buzzing, interference noise coming from the speakers.

I turned the car off/on, but I had no luck. I pounded the rear speakers in the very back, but still had no luck!

Finally, I decided to turn the radio on and I cranked up the volume. And all of a sudden, the buzzing went away.

It only happened that one time to me so far, and I'm still confused on why it happened.

I could not turn it off. The whole thing lasted maybe 10-15sec. and it went away on its own when the idrive rebooted itself. I got the same screen when you start your car, warning about the seatbelt etc. Did not loose the engine though.

The only thing that happened to me once was when I opened the door I hear music playing softly... Looked around outside nobody there sat in the car and realized it was from the car. I started the car took it off and locked it. Never had the problem again.

Could be the dash? It seems like my tach buzzes when I start the M up. Whats also weird is.. my speakers seem to get static interference sometimes. Like you know putting your phone next to an old speaker and calling your phone? Anyone of you get that?

I also got scared to hell once, early on. But mine was a full volume blast, rather than a buzz. No iDrive reset, however. But another time, not long after that, all my settings were reset. After that, zero incidents.

I'd not worry about it until it happens again. Dealer is not likely to do anything unless they can duplicate issue. Or DME throws a code, which is unlikely.

By the way, ALL M3s buzz a little when iDrive loads, and lasts for a few minutes. You can hear it when you turn the car off and put your ear to the door tweeter. I was a bit worried initially, but I've counted 4 cars, and all do that, so I know it's 'normal'. Good luck; hope it doesn't happen again.

Seems like the same issue then. A gremlin in there somewhere . Did it happen while you were doing something with the controls? Or just by itself without touching anything? In my case, I was lowering the volume while the change from SAT to CD was taking place, and maybe that had something to do with it. Hasn't happened again in 10 months, so I'm not worried now. And it was momentary. Several folks have had it like you, where they had to pull a fuse or disconnect the battery because noise didn't go away. One guy got blasted when opening the trunk, with nobody inside the car; THAT was weird.

Anyway, I'd probably try disconnecting the battery and hoping that clears your gremlin before heading to a dealer. If it happens again, then you'd have no choice but to let one mess with your car (probably a DME reprogramming or something). Good luck, and keep us posted.

Let me guess... the Enhanced Premium Audio is your sound system.

I think that there has been at least 2 software updates for the MY2009 iDrive. You should contact you dealer, perhaps one of those updates address your audio issues.

Another case...

Ditto my 2009 this evening, but I got soft static when opening the rear doors and no music. I do not have Enhanced Premium Sound or iDrive. Stopped on its own after about 60 seconds, but I thought I could smell something burning ever so slightly afterwards. Anyone else make any progress on this?

Garage List
Its an idrive glitch. Happened to me when I had the 09 idrive system especially when playing music off of the hdd. Go to the dealer and get the update and it will go away.
