Porsche 3.6L Metzger Vs. 3.8L
what makes the metzger engine better than the 3.8L found in the turbo, gt2, & gt3?
i have read somewhere on 6speed the 3.8L has 25% weaker rods than the metzger. also does the 3.8L still have the dry sump? did they change the cooling from water to air to air to air in the 3.8? there has to be a reason why the 3.6 is superior and why it was chosen on the gt2 rs and im trying to understand why and what made it that much better. any porsche gurus here ?

To clarify, the 3.8 and the 4.0 liter in the GT3/RS/4.0 models were all Mezger engines. Aka the most winning engine in race car history (by large margin).
The 3.8 in the 997.2 GT3 was clearly a much more powerful engine if youve seen them race side by side vs the 3.6 and the 4.0 was absolutely a masterpiece of materpieces. I dont know why they chose the 3.6 over the 3.8/4.0 but im sure there is. GT2 RS i was absolutely bonkers. One of the best cars Ive ever had the pleasure to be in. The Mezger (not Metzger, named for Hans Mezger) has Nikasil liners and individual cylinders that can be individually replaced. They changed from air cooled, with huge cooling fins, to individual water jackets on each cylinder when they went from air cooling to water back in the switch from the 993 to the 996. I do believe the new GT3 retains a dry sump oil pump though.

The 991 GT3 also has Ti connecting rods.

Yeah, the 991 GT3 isn't a mezger though. I think I remember watching on Youtube (maybe it was the Evo channel) with one of the engineers at launch that they used a tuned 991 engine because 1. the new engine is almost as good as a mezger and 2. if they were to replicate the mezger into the 991, it would be cost prohibitive.
