I had some random tapping when switched to Liquimoly, then changing to current BMW spec oil, tapping reduced in frequency - took most of the service life of the BMW (5K) to eventually be very random single ticks, then the second change of BMW OEM oil quieted it down completely.

How long ago did you switch back (miles)? Is the video with BMW oil?

it's hard to say whether the noise is coming from the top or bottom of the engine.

Mine sounds EXACTLY like yours, but the mystery deepens- when I turn the wheel in the driveway to listen inside the wheel well the noise dissapears. You read that right... turn the wheel back to center, ticking noise comes back. Turn it off center right or left, rev engine, NO TICKING. So it's not valve noise, it's not rod bearings (changed) or cats. It actually only occurs when the wheels are pointed straight. Test my theory fellow tickers, and somebody please figure this out!

Hey all- Just bumping this thread up again since I'm sure with the warmer weather a lot of us have seen a return of the annoying "tick". As per my last post I have the same noise that you all have experienced and recorded. But sitting still and cranking the wheel to one side or the other the ticking goes away. So it's not rod bearings, not cats (x pipe) not valve lash, and not injectors etc. It's probably not the idler pulley or the heat shields. So WTF is it??? Getting tired of my M3 sounding like a 500k mile Honda

During currently the warmest Summer for ages (which is like 32C in Sweden), I also started to notice some of this ticking. Didnt worry me as Ive seen its been around with plenty cars, but still nice to hear you have taken some of the suspect areas away. And hey, easy enough to turn the wheels should it get too anoying...

I recently switched to Castrol Supercar 10-60W from BMW Twin Power 10-60W and have noticed an increase in ticking on the drivers side when the window is down and I am close to a barrier on the road. It does sound like the lifters or something but just wanted to check in. Bearings have been replaced with BE and ARP Bolts earlier this year.

Redline will quiet it down.
Use a blend of their 5w50 and 10w60.

The ticking I had some of Im pretty sure has nothing to do with the engine/oil but heat somewhere else.

I'm sure many of us have owned several BMWs and long enough to know that ticking is just part of BMW engine noise. lol...

My Z4 had the notorious N52 lifter tick. People swore it would go away and come back depending on the oil. There was a service bulletin that came out and the lifters were replaced - problem solved.

There was no such thing for my N52, I had taken it into the dealership several times when it was still under warranty and they never had mentioned there was a service bulletin fix. Canada always gets the shitty end of the stick.
However 200,000 miles later, the car still runs. So I don't think the ticking has ever done anything bad to the engine.

You must rev the hell out of it then.
Mild driving aggravated the issue with the hydraulic lifters

What year is your Z4? That's a lot of miles. Mine is a 2008 with only 46k miles. That's about to change since it's now my DD since buying the M3.

Mine wasn't Z4, I had a 2007 E90 323i which was the 2.5L N52 engine. Its the same as the 3.0L n52 just smaller displacement. The only convertible I ever owned was a 325ci. Surprisingly that M52 is bulletproof also, ticked but it has nearly 300,000km on it and my uncle still drives it today!
I daily all my cars, before buying the M3 I was really considering getting an M coupe, but the S65 is just another beast. There is nothing quite like it when you rev it past 5000rpm.

OKAY THANK YOU. Mine does this... but as soon as i turn the wheel and leave it there it stops...
But now, i have a CEL 2762 VANOS maximum stop outlet bank 2 which is weird because ive never heard about vanos problems on s65's and every shop i have contacted doesn't really know how to proceed... and cant find a vanos unit online to purchase anywhere.
Now my car is starting to make a rattling sound on very low rpms.

So I'm having the same issue on my car, I read most of thread. I know this is an old thread. So I'm hoping someone by now found or pinpointed the issue.

I don't believe it has anything to do with oil. I was using Castrol before I switched to Liqui Moly and noise it still there. I noticed the ticking noise more as the weather got hotter. Also, I noticed the noise after I installed TMS test pipes and pulley. Not saying test pipes or pulley have anything to do it, I'm thinking maybe something may be loose. Once my car cools down, I'll take a look.
