I thought it was the other way around? That AUX > BT Streaming for sound quality.

That really depends. BT has the ability to stream original quality digital depending on what your source is and what BT version and audio codec is used. The car decodes the data with the car's built in DAC. The advantage is a pure digital connection from your audio device to the car even if it is lossy.

With AUX, you are dependent on the DAC on whatever device is sending the audio to your car. That digital source (unless you're using an analog source... but that's rare) goes through a digital to analog conversion (DAC). Assuming you have a optical bus EDC/Individual/L7 audio system, the car then converts that into a digital signal which it sends to the amp (ADC) then it gets converted to a analog signal to send to the speakers (DAC).

In summary, if you use AUX input, your audio goes through a digital-to-analog-to-digital-to-analog conversion - very lossy for the original audio. You are also dependent on the DAC built into your device which may or may not be very good. On a cheap add-on screen device, they probably slap in the cheapest DAC component they can. Also, you connect to your device (add-on screen) with bluetooth anyway, which adds to the whole chain. Just bluetooth directly to the car (D-D-A) is less steps than this D-D-A-D-A conversion chain.

Of course what "sounds good" is subjective. Whether you care about the audio loss is up to you.

If you are DIYing a CIC just buy a CIC from a X1. They are almost always running the CIA firmware since they were built until 2014.

I have all of the parts on the way now. If anyone wants one send me a PM.
I live in the York/Lancaster, PA area and I'm interested in the $1000 kit if you can help me.
I've found some things on eBay but don't know how much of the harness I can use from the ccc.

Thank you.

My iPhone 12 pairs and works brilliantly with the factory Bluetooth in my 2011 M3 with CIC. Contact sync works great, excellent call quality and outstanding Bluetooth audio streaming.

Even though I’ve had a carplay interface in my car for the last two years, I still used the factory Bluetooth for audio and calls.
