thanks for posting the pdf.

just thinking about this, it seems the worst that could happen is that there is some different wiring from the phone base to the combox, new phone base, and finding someone that will do a software upgrade. Seems to me the hardest part would be getting bmw to update the software should they not offer an official retrofit for sale.

still not waiting for march ... but I did order 6nf ... along w/ all other listed prerequisites

week 7 ... so close to March ... is it worth a 2 week delay? maybe ... not sure.

think i could ask my dealer to change my order from priority 1 to a lower priority to delay things a bit? any dealers out there see a problem w/ me requesting that?

as you can see, i keep going back and forth on whether to wait on this or not.

Also been weighing the numbers (holiday cash, new lease terms) to see what it will cost besides time and screwing with a set deal. Anything delivered past March 3 will lose the holiday cash.

yeah i already missed out on that cash ... it would be a much more difficult decision in that case

i can see a really slick pandora app being integrated into the idrive system with this... among other ideas

I found this thread below where someone in england had their dealer add the 6nr option and it pushed their build week back to march....

So as far as how to make this happen if you choose to, it appears dealers already have access to this option in their system (at least in england).

Sometimes -not guarranteed- improvements scheduled for 03 production months are installed in 02 month. For example, I have found that the GSM TCU (Assist module) that replaced the CDMA TCU was supposed to be done from 03/08-on but there are several members in this forum with 02/08 production M3 with the GSM TCU.

You can always ask and set a condition that if adding this option moves your car several production weeks forward then to cancel that addition so you are not affected economically.

quick question - what week in 2011 is production week 1? Would it be the week of Monday January 10th? If that's the case, then my week 7 build is one week before March ... not 2. thanks anyone for the clarification.

My understanding is that for 2011, Week 1 was the week beginning December 27, 2010.

interesting, thanks. i'm still not certain whether production weeks are measured from the factory opening date or literally the first week containing a 2011 date. thanks...i bet there is a thread on this somewhere but i haven't found it yet.

It's hard to say whether 639 will do it - because the doc I posted on 6NR over on the f10 forum is specific to the UK market, 639 is not an available option in the UK. 633 is available, and most people will get the Professional Multimedia Package here, which includes pro nav, 633 Bluetooth with telematics, BMW assist and BMW online portal, plus voice control @ £2,000 - a significant saving over ordering these individually.

I would say that 639 should do it, if that includes BMW telematics - which I guess it does if it includes Assist.

How confusing?

I wrote bmwusa to ask if 6nr was just a software update / could be retrofitted to post-september cars (i.e. combox cars). I, of course, didn't really expect to get a useful answer back but what the hell... i tried. The response was basically "sorry the new features are part of the combox, which can't be retrofitted at this time." I wrote back trying to clear up my question but I doubt the effort will be fruitful.

Also, just looking at the way the 2009 production calendar and 2010 production calendar mesh together ... it looks as though the 2011 production week one should be the week starting Sunday, January 2nd.

That answer creates more questions. I have also emailed them and we'll see what I hear. From what I have heard however the dealers have not received any order info on this option or if it is even going to be available.

Exactly ... sorta makes it sound like the hardware is already there doesn't it? I suspect the nice lady had no clue and didn't appreciate what i was asking ... she's probably dealt with a lot of questions regarding retrofitting a combox and used the same reply. dunno.

Here's the exact reply (relevant paragraphs only):

"Thank you for contacting BMW of North America, LLC regarding the telecommunications system.

The features specified are part of the Combox, which is the new phone and mobile device connectivity platform in BMW vehicles. At this time there is no retrofit kit available."

interpret as you wish

FWIW,

I just received a call from BMWNA regarding my follow-up email. The lady was very nice and fully admitted that they aren't technically trained.

She said however that she made some calls and was told that the 6nr option is not just software and it will not be possible to retrofit through bmw. I specifically asked her if she made clear to her contacts that I wasn't talking about the combox. She said she did make that clear and read them my email word for word.

Of course, this is second-hand information from someone who doesn't even know what 6nr is, and there is no indication of the reliability of the person she spoke with.

If you're leasing then as far as I know the rates/residual for January trumps the holiday cash.

My production week was just changed by my CA to week 11 to lock in 6NR. This delays my ED by one month. Hope its worth the wait.

Actually, it is a tad better with Dec holiday cash and one point higher residual. When also then adding the price increase in January, December definitely appears better.

Has your CA actually seen the 6NR option as available by Week 11? Is there an additional cost as in UK 5 series cars?

On Sunday, I contacted one of the resident dealers on this forum. His reply was that it wasn't visible yet but he would let us know when it was.
