Let's Install a Warning Triangle

US-spec cars do not come equipped with factory warning triangles. BMW does sell accessory warning triangles in the US, but they are universal sizes and do not necessarily fit well in the car. The Euro-spec triangles are not sold in the US because they are not DOT approved... since the Euro triangles are reflective on one side only, the DOT does not believe we American consumers will set the triangle up correctly when we need it.

If you are lucky enough to get an E9X Euro triangle, there is a special spot for it in the trunk of the car. For the E90 M3, you need 2 brackets, which are available in the US. No tools are required for this mod.

Remove the expanding rivet that holds the trunk trim panel on the upper, aft, left corner. I was able to use fingernails to do this. Pull the center pin first, then pull the rest of the rivet body. Take care not to lose it in case you need to sell your car someday and want to keep your triangle for the next car.

The triangle brackets install into 2 holes, already stamped in the trunk sheet metal. One is a round hole the other is slotted. Install the brackets so the oblong pin on the bracket fits into the slot, then turn the bracket 90 degrees. The round pin in the bracket will snap in to the round hole in the trunk and the bracket will be locked in place. The aft bracket does the same job as the expanding rivet you removed.

The triangle is designed to fit one way in the brackets. Look for grooves in the blue plastic body. Mine however, fit best as shown.

Remember that if you ever use your triangle, put the reflective surface facing back away from your car so traffic coming behind you can see it!

Can you list the Euro part numbers for the triangle..... I sold my previous ED 335 coupe with the triangle inplace thinking that I was going to do another E93 335 ED.... But now I am getting a M3 instead and would like to have this and the first aid kit in place.

lol.

On the euro E93 M3, the warning triangle is positioned on the inside of the boot-lid.

I don't have it with me at work, but you can see the last 7 digits of it on the triangle box in my first pic: 1 095 457. So, if I had to guess, the complete part number would be 71 60 1 095 457 based on Group 71 prefix. I can verify later if you need it.

Warning triangle

My slightly different install, using the E46 style bracket. I'm working on installing the E46 under seat first aid kit in the CD changer compartment below.

It's been a few years--don't recall. Not too expensive.

This is the US one, which is $26 from BMW USA: http://accessories.bmwusa.com/ItemVi...&productId=575

They also have a flashing LED one for $55.30: http://accessories.bmwusa.com/ItemVi...&productId=833

Here is the European one from LeatherZ for $58: http://leatherz.com/Merchant5/mercha...etyConvenience
