I also want to add some help for those that loosen the subframe for this job. The subframe itself has room to shift around so if you don't line it back up to the same spot before, you will need an alignment. But I read somewhere that mentioned the subframe is lined up at the factory to the body/chassis within certain tolerance.
Anyhow, when I did the rod bearing, the way I lined the subframe back up is as follow: - when putting the subframe back together, after I positioned it back up before tightening everything back down, I used the rear 2 most bolts (they are the stretch bolts) to line it back up to the exact location as before. These bolts have washers that have 4 notches in them. Spin the washers til those 4 notches lined right back up to their old marks and indentations. You will know what I mean when you get there. You can also use a marker to mark the orientation of the washer before you loosen them if you think you will have a hard time feeling the notches catching. I think this is the easiest way to make sure the subframe is in the same spot as before. The manual call for these bolts to be tighten up last so don't crank them all the way down, just hand tighten them to more or less lock the subframe back in position and you should be good. Good luck. Last edited by e92zero; 10-11-2021 at 11:37 PM.. |

I've pulled 2 subframes off e92s now, one 335i, and in my M3. They have dowel pins which align them to the car. I marked both cars prior to removing them and found that the dowel pins aligned better than I could have with marks. If either affected the alignment, it was less than the threshold I can sense.

I tried this the other weekend and couldn't get the old mounts out. Was too tight of a tolerance. I think I was being too big of a baby with the subframe. Going to try this weekend and see if I can pry the subframe down a bit.
The passenger side was much closer, but this was the driver's side. Not even close. Engine bar lifted the engine up an inch as well. |

Just did this. Had horrible vibrations in the cabin due to over torquing the motor mount and subframe bolts. Lesson learned. Follow all the exact torque specs if you’re going to do this.
