you should be fine. But you are entilted to take the car where you wish. My advice is to call your local BMW certified body shop and ask them how does their glass work as it is 100% sublet. Then call that guy (who also probaly does insurance work) and have them do it as they prob do a ton of BMW glass a week.

Again, this is what I remeber from way back, not sure where the post and who posted that.

I for one agree, in a year of "normal" driving, my windshield does look like it was sandblasted.
Okay, I'm glad this post came up. And the one by m3an also

I've got ~22,000 miles on the car in just over 52 weeks. There's noticeable sandblast-ing on the glass. I thought it was because the M3 sits lower to the ground... but in the back of my mind, it seemed like there was much more of this than there should be.

Then, last week, the glass got hit by debris from a truck in front of me. It made a really small dent in the glass. It was an impact that I thought would, in all of my previous vehicles, caused a fracture. But it did not. Might be the "softness" of the glass took the impact without spreading.

Anyhow, I was thinking about replacing the glass soon -- not because of the tiny dent -- but because I do NOT like seeing the sandblast-ing on the windshield when the sunlight is anywhere to the front or near-front.

Thanks, all.

Glass can be polished so you can remove most of the light imperfections..not chips of course

Same situation, I went with the aftermarket glass. No logo in the corner. No chips yet. Looks the same. Rain sensor works fine. I'm glad I saved the few hundred dollars. BTW I have a 08 e92 M3. 55K miles

I have aftermarket glass on the windshield and it seems far more durable than OEM so far - no issues with headlights nor rain sensor

I've heard the OEM Saint-Gobain glass is better than the Pilkington stuff, though

By the way, depending upon your relationship with your insurance company - you can strong arm them into paying full cost. You simply have to have multiple cars with them and minimal or no claims.

I have this situation and found that competing companies would buy/install OEM glass. I simply told them that if I had to pay out of pocket I would and then take all my business elsewhere. That worked and my insurance company paid full frieght.

I'd frame it as: someone driving a $75k car wants to know if there are better options than needlessly throwing away almost $300. As we've seen from a number of people, there are those that believe the OEM is not better.

Exactly..well said.

Not sure if we can say better, but there are quality aftermarket glass options which are at least equal to OEM.

Add me to the list of those who are satisfied with their aftermarket windshields. There some parts on the car that I would insist on oem; glass is not one of them.

Did aftermarket on two cars I liked very much. Completely satisfied. Just make sure the installer is trustworthy.

OEM

Aftermarket windshield, not even once.

As someone who notices details like slight visual distortion an aftermarket windshield (usually of inferior quality) would drive me nuts. Also, only the OEM windshield was extensively tested for all the various safety requirements in the original application; it being the only thing between me and rocks and other things at 80mph or how it behaves in a severe accident is very important to me. An aftermarket windshield was not tested in extreme crashes and impacts on your car; the OEM was, and it performs to spec when it actually matters.

Also, the two things I check first when evaluating a used car:
1) All matching OEM or same quality tires (no Hankooks or worse, saw a E39 M5 on eBay recently with Champion tires, had to give a moment of silence for that car.)
2) OEM glass
Substitutes in this area signal cost cutting by the previous owner in critical areas; on to the next car.
I can't be the only one.

Go aftermarket. My friend is on his 2nd OEM glass, and it looks like sandblasted shit. My stock windshield looks like a planetarium when facing the sun. Definitely going aftermarket with my car.

I had my windshield replaced recently and I think my windshield is polarized. At least thats what the tech said.

I believe its OEM/Pilkington. It has a slight polarized/purplish color to it when you see it in the right light.

Car is in the shop right now or I would take a pic and post it up.
