If you have a Bimmerzone spare which is the most common solution, they are upfront about the rim no fitting a BBK.

I did have the Bimmerzone spare prior to putting on a BBK, it will fit with a spacer, the size of the necessary spacer will vary with the size of the calipers. Luckily I use spacers for my winter wheels, so keeping a spacer in my trunk isn't an issue.

I just changed my 17" to the x5 e70 18" when I swapped the e90 m3 suspension including brakes onto my 335i.

I ended up with a 155/60/18 given the slightly smaller 335i ture diameter. If going with a custom solution it is important to check that the tire is wide enough for a 5" wide rim.

For those concerned about the center bore I took a 74.1 to 72.56 plastic center ring and coated it with RTV and installed it overnight. The ring is now sufficiently "glued" to the rim making it essentially a rim with the right bore.

With that said it is fully optional as long as care is taken to center the lugs. Centering rings just ensure that people don't install the rim incorrectly and it makes it faster and easier.
