Someone tested the G80 M3 yet?

Just watched a few videos and read a bit on the G80 section. Would be interesting to hear if any of you E9xM folks have driven the G80 yet and have some thought?

Cheers

I drove it, drove the f as well, neither one has enough to sway me from what I have which is a 2008 E90 sedan M3. I'll keep my old one especially given the looks of the new one. not enough wow factor for sure in either of the new versions

It seems bleeding fast though and handling obviously upgraded big time. Videos talking about steering and auto gear box as a bit of a soul killer?

I haven't driven one but in the Chris Harris review he stated that the powertrain felt a bit too much like a quicker M340i. It lacked some of the "special"-ness of even the f80.

Yeah, that was one of the vids I watched. I think Chris Harris is a star. Bit sad though that he in this video referred to the E92 as a "flawed" design, way back when when he did a video on his own E92 he simply loved it. Obviously tons of much more exciting cars passed through his hands since, but where did flawed all of a sudden come from... me no like no more...

Having had a bunch of ZF8 cars I always said how amazing overall the ZF8 was.

But watching the Straightpipes review the other day I could feel/hear the lag just from the video compared to the DCT. I think it's way better for a car that will live 99% of its life on the road not the track, but that scary ass shaking bang bang of the DCT is half the fun and what made it feel like it was really running at 11/10th's when it was pushed.

Slightly slower transmission + slight turbo lag and lack of throttle response smoothes everything out a bit even if you're putting down a lot more power and speed.

I think the G80 is probably the best daily if they managed to not make the ride quality as brick hard as the X3M.

But yes this is all conjecture...look forward to trying to actually get some seat time at the next M Track day.

Whats there to test? Its a ZF8. Its a s58. Its heavy. The x3m has been available for months lol. After owning a zf8 I can tell you its not horrible but its not comparable to a dct. Electric steering is garbage. If you enjoy the e90 m3 you won't enjoy a g80.

Trust me I tried. I went to the F82 and it was a great daily but a shitty sports car. Numb steering and farting engine. And the new g80 is worse than the outgoing f80 since it doesn't have the DCT nor the looks

For me after a certain performance threshold the character of the car is all that matters. Adding 50-100 HP or 5-10 in trap speeds to the M3 doesn't add to the overall package if its numb and has no soul. Plus the M3 cars are getting bigger, which detracts from the experience. I like the E90 because of its size, great visibility and easy to place on track.

For this reason the E9x M3 was the pinnacle of the m3. You could make the argument for the E46 I guess, but its got a lot of nagging maintenance/reliability issues and only 6 cylinders. They'll never gain back what made the old M cars great.

Well put. BTW, I have the exact same mods as you lol. Ohlins RT, Alpine stage II, Test pipes, and Corsa

Passed by a dealer yesterday and got my first look of the M3/M4 in real life. Read it looks much better in the flesh vs pics... Maybe it will grow on me with time, but can't help loving the classic form of the E9xM!

Cheers,

So far reviews are saying it has great steering - so hopefully won't be numb.

Also, you don't have to get the zf8, manual should be the transmission of choice.

Whether lack of feedback or not apparently it is extremely precise. And yes agree, with that torque and bo DCT I'd definitely go for manual.

just wanted to add here, did any one know this thing is brake by wire? Thats actually worse than the design.

"One of the M Division’s latest technological darlings is its drive-by-wire brake system. It was first introduced in the BMW M8 and it will make its way to the BMW M3 quite soon. Like all drive-by-wire brake systems, it removes the mechanical link between the brake pedal and the calipers, handling it all electronically."

So just to reiterate:
Auto trans (Not DCT)
Electronic Steering
Brake By Wire
almost 4,000lbs
Turbo 6 Cyl

Yeah this car is a gigantic failure

All those specs are on point with the Giulia Quadrifoglio (the M3's main rival). Also on point with the RS5 and C63 (minus the 6 cyl vs 8).

BUT none of the other cars offer a manual gearbox.

So we can say the whole class of fast small-ish sedan is a failure?

I don't think so, I think its just progression. Soon enough we won't be able to buy any fast ICE car, let alone a manual one. The grass is always greener I guess.

Exactly. What a desire to whine and complain.

The likelihood of me getting a 6MT G80 is extremely high

I've been thinking about getting one too to keep the E92 company.

It's actually a lot of car for the price when you consider the amount of practicality, comfort and performance (and 6MT).

I guess we have different ideas of "progress"

Tuning a B58 and putting a zf8 in it is not progressive lol. Its actually regressive objectively compared to the days they built engines and gear boxes for their M cars.

Agreed, I've been eyeing up the F90 M5s, but I don't know if I'm ready to give up on the third pedal just yet. G80s got a lot to give for less.

I agree with the zf8, as a huge fan of DCT (I prefer it over manual), I’ll be getting the manual in the G80 because of no DCT.

Everything else besides the transmission is a step up from the F80. The chassis and steering are much better, and that’s what the M3 is really all about.

Yup, and with a few modifications, I’m sure it will be just as fast as the F90 M5.

having owned an f80 competition, an f90 competition, and driven the g80- its a fantastic car. hard to compare to the e9x m3's tbh.

the g80 is everything you want for a daily, and has plenty of potential for weekend/track day smiles. now, if only it looked more like an m340....

both f's were full bolt on. my favorite by far has been the f80. that car always made my butthole pucker up.

f90 was fast but it was a nightmare to track in regards to tire wear. very boring around town bc of the lack of low end power. a bit reminiscent to the e9x

also to add:

loved my DCT.
ZF on the f90 was exactly what it is- a basic automatic. but WOT- up/down shifts were crisp and quick. DCT is a bit tedious around town (i drive into NYC daily)
