Continental Extreme Contact DW vs Michelin Pilot Super Sport

I'm about to purchase a new set of rims and I'd like to get some feedback on the extreme contact dw's. I'm close to getting the pilot super sports, but I see the extreme's have a higher tread wear rating and they got really good reviews on tirerack.com. If anyone has them please chime in about they're performance!

The DW's are crap compared to the PSS's. I did a direct A/B comparison last week against the two. The PSS is superior in every way.

This is what happened to the DW after 100 laps on the autocross course.

definitely get the PSS tires. I haven't owned the PSS before, but I have had several sets of PS2s and a set of the Contis. the PSSs are supposed to be better than the PS2 in every way, so transitive logic would indicate that the PSS are therefore better than the Contis.

Do the PSS's last longer than the PS2's? My only complaint about the ps2's were the tread life....

Have the DWs on another car and while I don't think they're as good as PS2s, for a daily driver that's pushed aggressively at times, they do well. Can't argue with the price and tread rating.

And here's what happened to a PSS after one track day:

It's possible to destroy any tire with enough abuse. They must have served good koolaid at that comparison event. The DW is not in the same price class as the PSS. 30% cheaper for 97% of the performance is a good deal in most people's eyes. I notice they didn't have any wet comparisons at that event, maybe because the DW has been found by some autocrossers to be faster than full-tilt-boogie racing rain tires in wet conditions, which means it probably compares very favorably to the PSS and almost every other street tire in the wet.

Now, PSS vs. anything in the neighborhood of $1200 per set? I'm taking the PSS

The PS2 have a tread wear rating of 220 while the PSS are 300. So from a number standpoint, yes.

I can get the conti's for $1200 mounted and balanced vs $1380 for the PSS's.

If you value side to side stiffness of the sidewall and steering feel, the PSS will be money well spent at $180 difference for the set. Not everyone is picky about those particular aspects of tire performance, and rarely will you exceed the max grip of either tire on the street, so I don't discount the Conti, but I'd go PSS.

That is not typical wear for a street tire after one trackday. That was probably overdriven and undercambered. If it wasn't how come that didn't happen to the rear tires, lol

I am going ot guess the pictures above are of your front tires, and both of you understeer way too much and can benefit from camber adjustments.

Now is there any reason no one here is using r888 tires or nt01s ?

i was just wondering if there was weight issues why the r888s or nt01 were not used on the bimmer... coming from a gt3 i'm just not sure if that is a concern or if I can get my r888s put on the m3

I have a set of the Contis on my E90 335. I went with them rather than the PS2's for the same reasons everyone else compares them: similar or better performance, lower price and much better tread life (street use only!)
The conti are better than the stock RFT in every way. I did loose some of the intial turn in bite that the stocks had and I'm sure the PS2's would have had. That is the only performance I've lost.
I did my first track day on the tires about 1 week ago and they were sticky but did get over heated after about 4-5 laps of the 2 mile track. They were totally worthless once that occurred. I'd say my stock suspension set up was just as much to blame as the tires themselves.
If you are going to track the car at all I would go with the PSS over the Conti's as I'm confident they would do better. I have witnessed it first hand as most of the cars running One Lap this year wore the PSS's, including the winning team, and they held up great...on a heavy ass GTR!
If you aren't going to the track the Conti's are a great tire and much cheaper than the PS'2. The PSS is actually cheaper right now though so even better!
Good luck with your decision.
Cheers

And "Tires 101" dictates that wear rating comparisons across different tire brands is utterly useless...

I agree except he is comparing the rating for two Michelin tires so, in this case, the comparison is valid that the PSS at 300 will wear better than the PS2 at 220.

Go with BFGoodrich R1. Don't get the R888 or the NT01.

We ran the R1 at the 12 hour race at NJMP. The new R1 was over 1 second a lap faster and one set lasted a full 7 hours with tread left.
BTW, Michelin owns BFGoodrich.

Wow. My stock PS's (not PSS's) looked way better than that after 8,000 road miles and 100-AX laps. I DO have 1.8-degrees of negative camber, thanks to camber plates, but that looks horrid.

That's why I use 34 in the front and 27 in the back (cold) for AX. I don't plow through corners either.
