The question I have about the Dinan pieces is, how can the epoxy or whatever fixture they use between the two joints where the metal mounting tabs join the carbon tube be any more rigid (taking loads that flex the chassis a couple mm at most without them) than a hunk of aluminum? I suspect the answer is, meh, either you want pretty carbon fiber in your engine bay or you don't,

I would thing a brace is inly as strong as its weakest kink and given they keep the aluminum c ernter section, any rigidity of the carbon is kost in the entire system and if anything the bar would load and unload at a funny rate or inconsistent rate and lead to breskage in the joints where it attaches to aluminum

I am all about every ounce. I just dropped 40 lbs off my e92 by deleting 1 lb here and 1 lb there... I have been skipping breakfast as well. Getting my weight down for track season - haha

Well it's a good thing I bought mine over 4 years ago on sale direct from Dinan for under $300. ...I agree, these are not worth $500. lol

Thats a really good price, usually see used ones for more than that.

how so? and dont say because they had to use adhesive to bond the CF shaft to the metal end pieces. BMW uses adhesive to hold together parts of the unibody, and require shops that replace certain parts such as quarter panels to be bonded on with adhesive as opposed to welding, so theres no issue with strength. also how do you think CF roofs are installed on e92m3? they are glued on and held in place with rivets...so yah, i dont think these will decrease anybodys performance.

Roof is bonded to steel which is as strong or stronger. Cf attached in anyway to aluminum which is a weaker material pound for pound than CF and thus the center aluinum piece i kept attached to CF pieces which mesns the entire load duribg corneeing is limited by the strength of the weakest piece which is the center aluminum. Given the materials are different in strentgh the load transfer is likely not as uniform as the oem setup that is all one material

The roof skin also takes next to no load. It’s there to keep the wind out of your hair and the sun off your neck
The point is they don’t increase performance and cost $500 to do it And another poster in this thread accomplished the same aesthetic benefit with $10 in vinyl... If they are near weightless and stiffer by 500% or 5% id love to see data but it doesn’t exist. So it’s cosmetic. No bigs. People also buy that fancywide diffuser with holes in it that adds 15lb to the car so whatever you do you |

it does. i dont want to argue, but i am in the autobody industry and the roof is classified as structural.

I wanted to go ahead and put this debate to rest for those interested in doing this mod.
I swapped out the OEM ones with the dinan bars with weighing both and the results are in: They both weigh the exact same amount: 11.4oz for both sides. Hopefully this helps close the loop on this question of the ages |

Looks like titanium hardware is the only way to get rid of weight with the strut braces...

This screenshot also includes titanium license plate bolts, so leave those off if you don't want them.

nah, stuff like this i torque to the TAF standard (tight as F). karbonius is nice, but i haven't had time to enjoy it thoroughly. i'm probably going to tap my lower intake box with threaded inserts and use some titanium bolts to replace the airbox lid screws. a few of mine are just done from years of filter cleanings and such.
