Colt 1911 "kit"

I'm looking to buy a relatively inexpensive 1911 kit. I dont really care whether or not it's a colt. but I would like if it were a 5" barrel.

Im looking at this>http://www.e-gunparts.com/DisplayAd....uperSKU=&MC =

and this>http://www.diyguns.com/product_info.php?products_id=34
with the frame> http://www.fosterind.com/specials.php

I just wanted some input from you guys. and if you had any experience with this what are some tips you could give me
Thanks

Before you get the Colt, might I suggest a good pair of reading glasses?

Yeah, off topic, but still interesting, so as long as I'm here and I've read it ...

Go with Chip McCormick barrel, frame and slide, have a good gunsmith assemble, fit and test. Or go with a Kimber or Wilson combat, I've got both and they are far beyond what a service 1911 can offer, especially the Kimber Elite.

Kurgan has it right when he suggests a Wilson Comabt weapon...you will pay extra for the name but it is as reliable as 1911's get. I have a Kimber Stainless Pro TLE/RL II that i have dropped $1500 into in order to make to go boom everytime I press the bang switch...and it still has failure to eject and extract issues. In fact, I carried my Kimber as my off-duty weapon and at my last department qualification it jammed up on me and our armoror prohibited me from carrying it any longer. Had to go back to the trusty Glock 23. Our SWAT team just dropped Kimber as thier primary side weapon and have moved to the SigArms line of 1911's.

If you want uber-cool custom look into Ed Brown, Nighthawk, or Wison Combat.

I've been waiting for reviews on the Sig 1911, I'm looking at either an H&K P30 or the Sig 1911, still unsure. I've got a H&K P7M8 and it is the best pistol I own, I am hesitant to move to one of the modern H&K.

If law enforcement has dropped Kimber, it's for a good reason, then the Wilson is the answer and I've noticed that reloads don't feed well into the kimber, but the wilson will digest everything including mixed magazines of my loads and CCI blazers.

The P7 is an awesome pistol. I have an HK P9 in .45 ACP and it is the best of out the box gun I have ever owned or shot. Problem is that the mag release is at the bottom of the mag well/backstrap instead of on the side of the mag well/front strap and requires two hands to operate. This design is less than effecient for quick and/or tactical reloads.

My only issue with the Sig 1911's is that it is difficult to find a compact or carry size with a rail...I prefer to have the ability to throw a light on the front of my weapon.

Les Baer is another quality 1911 guy who makes great custom 1911s. Not inexpensive but you can't beat the quality. Check him out in addition to some of the other names mentioned like Ed Brown, Wilson and McCormick.

Surprised nobody mentioned Springfield Arms. I have a TRP model and love it. Have never had a jam, misfeed or any other issue(except when I used lower quality magazines(shame on me)).

I'm just not a fan of kit weapons, I opted for a genuine Colt AR-15 while my friends were piecing together DPMS and armalite franken-weapons. My "built at the factory" weapons always outperform theirs on the range and in the field. There is nothing like a custom fitted weapon, so if you get the kit, a good gunsmith should be able to tune it, but it may just cost you as much as purchasing a Wilson. I think my wilson elite ran near $2400 but it's action is very solid, nice and tight, almost as tight as my P7.

Yes, I always forget Les Baer, maybe because here in Cali, we have to acknowledge the certified list and a few of his models are not listed as they are on the web site, but you're right, very high quality and his finish is extremely tough as I usually don't opt for stainless, but do want a tough finish for outdoor use, hiking, fishing, etc.

may i suggest a Sigarms .228 compact? those things have amazing reliability, pack enough punch and not to big, so its easily concealable. i highly recommend it.

I was joking, I knew what he meant just looked like he was talking about a caliber.

On that note, I have a 228 and I love it. However, the OP specifically said he wanted a 1911 with at least a 5" barrel. The 228 is neither a 1911 or 5" barrel. And since the OP stated he wanted a 5" barrel, its apparently not going to be a CC gun. Therefore, it shouldnt have been put into consideration.

Carry on.

I have an original 1911 manufactured by Colt for the US Army in 1942. It is still in amazing condition and fired regularly. Also retained its US Army serial number after the war. Quite possibly one of the most enduring and timeless weapons. Simple and rugged. Love it.
