Thanks for the review Reed. I've come to the same basic conclusion. I feel like that the 70-200 is the best bang for the buck, will be a focal length I'll use most often, and the IQ is insanely good. I was looking at some comparisons, and even with the 1.4x TC, the 70-200 at f/5.6 was sharper than the 100-400mm at 300mm and f/5.6!

I want something that's not too heavy for an all-day shoot. I feel that the f/2.8 IS II version of that lens is great too, but nearly twice the price and weight! f/4 at those longer focal lengths produce very creamy bokeh as well.

I'm sure I'll play with that lens (100-400mm) before shipping it back. If anyone here is interested in it, you can pay me cost + shipping.

I do like long and it does have quite a bit of use from me.
300 + 1.4x These are cropped for effect ( someone requested these) and they were ~200 yds?+
What I am getting at is only you will know if you need the 70-200 vs 100-400, if you had to choose only one. Keep both if it works for you.

The MTF charts in the Canon Lens work book show different MTF charts for all 4 older variations of the 70-200 and I think the non-IS F4 is the best.

yes, perfect stalker lens, especially on a crop body....

I'm keeping both my lenses, they are both great, and i will find uses for each.

but because i use my 5DII more often, i won't get rid of my 100-400. but if i'm doing a shoot where i'm using my 7D, i'm not likely to touch it unless i want to shoot as close to an animal as i can without disturbing it.

and most things night use it for are too far away to retain IQ anyhow because of environmental factors getting in between like heat waves and smog. So it mainly is used to ID birds on my 7D

it would be a hard choice if i were forced to choose between them.

of all my lenses, the one i would get rid of first would likely be my 100MM macro. I just don't shoot enough macro stuff. and for it's image optics, it isn't quite as good as my 135 F2 and not as usefull as my 24-70. If it were a 100L series, it might be a different story and i'd try to use it more for portrait work, but that's not the case.

But for us poor folks the 100 non-L does come in handy if we don't have the 135 F2. I don't use it too much for macro and I do like the IQ and contrast of the lens.

That was not CA of the surfer girls.
HI, Lahina harbor to be exact.
Only 5 hours from CA though, so it wouldn't be a total loss if you moved here.

yeah, the 100 non-L is a really nice lens, it just doesn't pop in the final images, however a lot of that pop can be done in post processing.

I should try and use it some more and make a better choice on if i want to keep it around or not.

it's a nice size to work with, and not too heavy. so it does have it's benefits.

Yeah Mark. I think I'll be very happy with that lens. It's only a few grams heavier than my current telephoto.

Now, if only the 5DM2 would come back in stock...

Cool! Where'd you get it? You'll love this lens. I was looking at some images of The American Southwest and I noticed a good many of the pics were shot with the 24-105.

got it from Canon Direct as a refurb. Yeah, it was either that one or the 24-70 f/2.8, but this one is cheaper, supposedly sharper, and much lighter to travel around with. I didn't need the extra stop the f/2.8 offers, and instead I gain 3-stop IS!

I've been looking at that site since the big sale on Sunday and it has said Out of Stock all along. All the good stuff (except for the 85mm f1.8) is gone. How'd you swing that? A cancelled order maybe?

EDIT: Now the 85mm is gone as well. Lots of empty shelves at Canon.

yeah, cancelled orders, or they released some more into their stock. Lenses have gone in and out of availability all day (even if only for a few minutes), but sadly camera bodies haven't.

I need a news feed alert or something. Not that I can swing another lens now anyway. But a chance to pick up a 70-200mm F4L IS for under a grand would be hard to turn down.

I thought this was an interesting read... make sure to look at the photos before scrolling down the page to see what lens took those pics.

haha, i have it bookmarked.

take your time on the site, it has a lot more info then just the comparisons.

i do find a little of the info is a little inacurate from time to time however.

but considering the size of the database, i think it can easily be excused considering it has powershot style cameras and everything.

hmm... so my nearly 7 year old 20D has only slightly worse IQ than a 7D? And the 7D has only slightly less noise at higher ISO?
