Street Names in Navigation
Is there any way to display the name of the street that you are currently on in the navigation? I know that Acura and Lexus navigations always display the street name at the bottom of the map. I've got a 2008 M3 if that helps.

In a 2008, I don't know. In the 2009, the easiest way I've accomplished this is to change the 'right' display to show the arrows. It then shows the next turn instruction, the road that is, as well as the road you are on. There might be other ways as well... I'm still figuring it out.

Well, that's not exactly what I was looking for. By your method, you'd need to input a new destination to get the "arrows." But I'm talking about when you are just driving around, without a destination entered, can you see the street you're on? I have a feeling that there is no way to display this, which really makes the BMW navigation system inferior to all other systems, for not being able to perform this basic function.

I think I might know how to, I will check it 1st thing tomorrow morning and get back to you if I do find out how to.
Try changing them from 3D to 2D view perspective. |

i know what you are talking about, having driven a TSX before. I think that the BMW system only displays street names next to the street, not in a separate field. And when you zoom out, it only displays the major streets.

On our X3 it shows the current street and a bunch of other things on the right hand side of the map even if navigation is not on. You just need the map displayed.

But, in answer to your question...Yes you can get the street displayed, but only on the right "miniscreen" (I think its called the Assist Window) Push the i drive controller to the Right so the miniscreen is highlighted, push down on the button, then select Current Position the first line will display the street name. (This works even if you aren't actually navigating anywhere) |

The BMW navigation doesnt even show the street names if you are in Perspective Mode. Even my Garmin does that.

You can also have current position in the left hand pane as well. Just goto Navigation and move down to the map views. Scroll across and current position is a option.
(This is for the 2008 Nav) |

So on the right side window (Assist Window), if I choose current location I'll get the street name displayed. But is this a dynamic function? Meaning that if I turn onto a new street, the diplay will automatically display the new street name?

Yes, I tried out the current position function. That's what I was looking for. However, the refresh is not as fast as the Acura navigations. In my TL, when I turned onto a new street, the navi would display it immediately. The BMW navigation seems to take about 4 seconds after I'm on the new street before displaying the street name.
