SOLVED-Please Help- Stoptech st60- cant find the correct pads
Hey guys,
I ordered stoptech "sport pads" 309.12471. These are supposedly for the ST60, but are bottoming out against the rotor hat. The pads are also protruding past the top of the rotor. First time ordering pads for this, as I purchased the system used, and just installed the kit. Not sure what to order for these. I'm trying to find a double duty pad just to get the system up and running. Thanks for any help you can give. -Steve Last edited by sperkins; 12-07-2022 at 03:44 PM.. Reason: Added pics |

It may be the picture angle but your rotor face seems "thin". Almost like the wrong diameter.
Take a picture of the full rotor face and maybe measure to make sure its 380mm. Last edited by Gossypiboma; 12-03-2022 at 11:12 PM.. |

Yes, 380mm confirmed. FWIW, the rings are new-came in original Stoptech packaging.
The kit came with a set of Pagid RSL29, which fit properly. Last edited by sperkins; 12-03-2022 at 11:55 PM.. Reason: Missing info |

Not sure if it's even helpful, but here's a couple of pics for comparison.
(These are with the ST street pads installed)

Is that the Trophy kit? Your pads look close, but not touching. I’m assuming they aren’t actually bottoming out on the hat- like mine are

Another observation: I stacked the Pagid on top of the Stoptech. You can see the difference in the ‘arc’ between the two pads. The second pic is the Stoptech pad against the OE rotor.
It appears these pads are for a 355mm rotor. Could this be possible? |

The basic pad shape used in the StopTech ST-60 was actually designed by AP Racing. It was in use for quite a long time before StopTech was even started. I was actually the sales manager at StopTech when we chose that pad shape! We did so because it is very commonly available.
We use a similar version in our AP Racing by Essex Radi-CAL Competition Brake Kits. The issue at hand here is that there are several different variants of that pad. StopTech uses the D51 radial depth version (the pad puck itself is 51mm tall), because that is how tall their disc faces are. In our AP Racing kits, we use the D54mm version. For example, for Ferodo pads, the shape number for our AP Racing six piston calipers is FRP3144. You can see a diagram of the pad here. The pad for the ST-60 is nearly identical, and Ferodo's pad shape is the FRP3054 seen here. The primary difference between these two is the radial depth difference. Unless something has changed drastically at StopTech, you need to make sure you are ordering pads with a 51mm radial depth in order for them to fit properly on your discs. There are also quite a few different thicknesses in these pads, so you need to be careful there as well. Ferodo offers 17mm, 18mm, 25mm, and 28.5mm thicknesses. The ones that fit StopTech ST-60 are the 17 or 18mm thick. You can't go thicker than 18mm. On our CP9668 AP Racing Radi-CAL for example, you can run up to a 25mm thick. Unfortunately, there are many different variants of the same basic racing caliper shapes, so you need to be very careful when ordering pads! If you need a great double-duty street/track pad for your StopTechs, the Ferodo DS2500 is about as good as it gets. You can see them on our site here (four sets in stock and ready to ship from our NC warehouse today): https://www.essexparts.com/ferodo-ds2500-brake-pads916 You can see more on Ferodo compounds in this article: Which Ferodo Racing Brake Pad Compound is Right for Me? Hopefully this clears things up a bit. Thanks. |

This video I shot a while back should help clarify this topic as well. At the 3:40 mark I talk about radial depth and show how different two discs of the same diameter can actually be:

The pad shape for the ST60 is 1247/DR11. The StopTech street pads will get very close to the rotor hat, but will not hit it.
The issue is that there are a lot of compatible pad shapes (1247/DR11/7793), but the backing plate differs. The E9x M3 rotor hat is different compared to other ST60 caliper rotor hats so for our cars, lots of those pads will rub against it as the pad wears. BW sells an ST60 PFC 83 pad (7793 shape) for next to nothing, but it will scrape up your rotor hat. The only company I've found (other than StopTech) that makes a pad with a compatible backing plate shape is CarboTech with the 1247 pad shape.

Thanks everybody for the tutorial. I really appreciate it, and have learned a lot.
I sent an email to Dave Zeckhausen, who was kind enough to further shed light on my pad dilemma. Here is his reply: "Steve, StopTech 309.12471 pads are for wide annulus rotors, and have a radial pad depth of about 59mm. They were originally made for the StopTech Touring BBK for the Dodge Charger/Challenger/Magnum, which uses 1-piece OEM rotors from the SRT8 models. That kit required a pad with a larger radial depth to fully sweep the SRT8 rotors. These pads can't be used on StopTech BBKs with 2-piece "standard annulus" AeroRotors, as you've discovered, because they will come in contact with the rotor mounting hardware and hat. StopTech now makes a few BBKs with wide-annulus AeroRotors, and these pads may be used there. But those are extremely rare kits, mostly 1-offs for endurance teams. The correct StopTech street pads for ST-60 brake kits using 355mm or 380mm standard annulus AeroRotors is 309.12470. That pad has been on backorder for at least 8 months and we still have no current ETA. Here's a link to ALL the pads we carry that fit the ST-60 calipers on your BBK: https://www.zeckhausen.com/catalog/i...th=24_7425_412 Note the Hawk pads are available with or without center eyelets. The caliper doesn't utilize the center eyelet, but it also doesn't interfere with anything. I prefer pads with the eyelet because it gives me something to grab onto, when removing the pads. A right angle plier hooked in there will let you pull out the pad with a good yank and it will come straight out, rather than getting cocked at an angle and jamming. Helps when you're in a rush.
