Whine, love it but?
I've read a ton of forums and they say the whine on my 012 e93 M3 is normal. I love the sound but I have had multiple people including M owners ask if I have a supercharger kit on it. I'm starting to think I have something wrong with my car. It has always had the same noise since I bought it. In low rpm's it certainly whines quit a bit, it does sound like a charger spooling. No codes BMW has never said anything except I need new tires. Am I crazy??!?!! I only have 39k on it, FYI.

Sounds like one of your belt pullies is on its way out. Does it change with RPM if you rev it up at a stop? Can use a stethoscope and listen to each pulley to find a possible issue.

Edit: Scratch that, you've got an e93. There was someone else that sounded very much like he was supercharged at the track as well.

Haha, I also get the "Dude what supercharger do you have?" every now and then because of this whine. I can't really hear it because I'm partially deaf but everyone tells me about it.

This car has a turbine like whine to it that certainly is reminiscent of a supercharger. If you have a loud exhaust you won't hear it. |

Might sound weird, but my E90 M3 had a loud whine for a few months as well. Happened mostly at lower RPMs, but also upon start up at times before even putting into gear. Finally started digging into issue, and it turned out to just be low on power steering fluid. Added fluid and whine went away immediately and has not returned. It's been about a year since I last heard it.

If it's not a worn belt driven accessory causing the whine, there are a couple things in the engine that can be noisy. The VANOS gears can have varying degrees of whine but are somewhat self-regulating, but the oil pump drive gears can cause significant whine if they were installed too tight.
Or it could be normal. Each engine has a slightly different character and may sound different. |

So it makes a slight whine when it is natural at a stand still. However when It's in gear she defiantly gets louder. I think I'm starting to notice it more now because I just changed my intake to the Eventurie intake system and it's much quieter than my old intake. Looks like it's time for a exhaust!

The mystery is solved, well kind of. I finally brought it into BMW to have them look at it. They determined that the water pump was on the way out. Cold starts I was getting this rattle noise as well as the whine. Just over $1200.00 dollars later the whine is still there, but not as great and the rattle is gone. I was assured that she has a clean bill of health. The parts were about $450 and the labor was over $800. I was surprised that they didn't change the belt since they were in there? I have 40k on it so why wouldn't they? I'm also happy that the whine didn't completely go away, as I do enjoy it.
