fascinating look forward to it
Ha - I don't know about that!

I like the weight loss but also think they look good aesthetically. My first legit car purchase was an e36 M3 back in the day. I think it would be a nice homage.

I am in the process of doing the same. Where did you pick up your rep mirrors?

I am fairly certainly the E9X base will need to play a role.

Those are the Motorsport mirrors that JELLIS has. Not the same as E36 mirrors we are talking about in this thread, but very nice.

Why would anyone want to do this? They don't look right at all on our car. Our mirrors are perfect!

I got them from ECS for around $120.

I agree that the E9x base will play a role but I foresee possibly making a custom base using the e9x version as a template.

Yes, a whole different ball-game. Malek at MRF currently has the mirrors. He bought them from JELLIS.

Lastly they speak to me from a nostalgia standpoint since my first legit car was an e36 M3 and one of my favorite pieces of that car's design was the mirrors - plus I think they are the best looking mirror design BMW has utilized period.

I will soon be releasing a thread detailing my weight loss program. These mirrors will likely only amount to 4 lbs but I have amassed a bunch of 1 lb to 4 lb weight loss items on the car that have resulted in more than 220 lbs total weight reduction (even after adding back the weight of aero, cage, rear seat delete, larger coolers, etc). My goal is to reach 300 lbs lost while still maintaining interior panels, carpet, stereo, HVAC. That level of weight reduction makes a significant impact on the feel and performance of the car.

i think you and i have done a few of the same things for weight loss, but i'm looking forward to your thread. i presume you weighed your SPL links to compare against the oem arms?

Unfortunately I didn't . According to SPL, their parts are lighter but I didn't verify. I also failed to weigh the CSF coolers to compare to factory. I assume that I added weight with CSF stuff especially considering increased size/volume.

It's likely the carbon bases just cover the original base plate.

Then you attach the mirror to the base from the back. I'm betting it's not a bolt on affair. Lots of measuring and drilling.

OK guys the e36 mirrors arrived. I already knew that I would need to figure out a custom mounting solution but I was unsure of the weight. Here is what I know -

E92 M3 Mirrors - ???
E92 non-M mirrors - 2.33 lbs
E36 M3 Mirrors - 1.58 lbs

Does anyone know the weight of the M3 mirrors? That would be nice to know in order to make my final decision. Based on the above information, I don't see any point in this modification from a weight loss standpoint. I think the weight of the e36 mirrors could be reduced with a custom mount that doesn't include metal. Both the e36 and e92 mirrors have a metal skeleton / support structure. However, even at that, the most I would save is 2 to 3 lbs total. Not worth the hassle IMO.

Yea, I did not think there was much on the table in terms of weight reduction. From what I understood, most cars running E36 mirrors do it because they are cheap to replace in the case one gets damaged.

I simply like the look, especially the carbon versions M24 (used to?) carry.

slicer - did you find success fabricating a base plate for the E36 mirrors?

Thanks!

Per my last post I determined that it wasn't worth the hassle. Therefore I returned the e36 mirrors.

Thanks for that. I missed it in your last post.

Agree that 2 - 3 lbs weight drop isn't enough to justify the effort. I'm a bit too obsessed with lightweight vehicle dynamics. My touring is 3200# with a half tank, while retaining a comfortable interior. The 300# diet is easily felt and makes me smile whenever I drive the car. I know I could have bought a Lotus Elise instead, but the practicality of a long roof is miles ahead of the little two seaters.

Your signature block shows commitment!
