CCC upgrade options (CIC vs NBT)

Hi guys,
First thread here and I'm new to E90s/M3 so sorry if this has been discussed already. Tried to search and couldn't find anything recent or specific to our cars. Anyways, I've only had my M3 less than 2 weeks and the mod bug is already biting. I want to upgrade the CCC navi to something newer (want Bluetooth, more responsive navi, etc plus I like the newer menu style better). Can't decide on doing the CIC or NBT upgrade. I would say my technical skills are pretty good (I work in IT/electronics and am pretty good at coding E46s at least). Is it worth the extra effort and expense to go NBT?

It really depends on your personal preference.

I upgraded the CCC on me E90 M3 to CIC, but was considering going to NBT. The issue is the the latter would have cost more than 3x the price, at least when I was looking (although I understand people have sourced the parts for relatively cheap).

If you can find the necessary NBT parts for the same as a CIC kit, then definitely go NBT as it is overall a nicer system. Conversely, if you can find a CIC kit for significantly cheaper than a NBT kit, than go with the former. In my opinion, the substantial extra cost of the NBT is not worth it over the CIC (I recently picked up a 2017 X3 which is equipped with NBT, and definitely do not think it is a system worth $2000 CAD more than a CIC system).

Good luck!

some people told me that M3 with Nbt remove the Mdm option ....

if true , nbt is impossible because mdm is very very important to have

Yes I did the CIC upgrade. It's pretty easy actually one you figure out the parts you need.

At a minimum you will need the CIC display, the CIC head unit, the FARKA cable between the CIC and the display, a USB connector for the glove box, and a FARKA cable for the USB connector. Optionally, you can also add on a combox if you want Bluetooth, USB streaming, or BMW apps. You can replace the iDrive controller and center console if you perfer the newer style with the shortcut keys. I actually kept the CCC syle controller. It works fine and I like the look and feel of the machined aluminum dial. You can also re-route the satellite radio antenna to the dashboard if that is important to you since the CIC has a built in satellite receiver.

There are a few different options for activating the system which each have their pros and cons. Just connecting it won't work, the anti-theft security system will lock out the system. I went with a CAN filter, a small module that manipulates the system into thinking it is still in original car. The OEM activation method is probably the best approach, but it costs several hundred dollars and is more involved to DIY.

You will probably want to change your car's VO and recode the CIC to your car. Although I don't think this is strictly required, especially if you use a CAN filter, it might act oddly if you do not. For example, mine was showing an outline of the donor X1 instead of an E90 on the maintenance tab and had screens about eco mode. This can be done using the standard BMW tools and your laptop.

You can keep the CCC controller but you lose quite a bit of functionality that the CIC brings. I'd spend the $100 or whatever and get the controller without it you're not even using the CIC to it's fullest and why even bother doing the retrofit half-assed for a relatively menial cost in this retrofit?

MDM is retained with the NBT retrofit!

But if you're DCT, apparently you lose your shift lights!

If you source the parts yourself and do the coding yourself, you can save a lot. You'll still need their emulator, or I believe there is Russian company that makes one also, not sure if it has all the functionality.

I'm going to need to look deeper into this. I wouldn't mind messing with something around $1000.

I looked into an NBT system from Bimmerretrofit. Their FAQ on the conversion really discourages this as a DIY. With the cost of hardware, I wasn't going to throw installation on top. Comments from those who have done this would be appreciated.

I am looking into upgrading my CCC to the NBT from Bimmer Retrofit. Can any of you recommend an installer near the Bay Area/Sacramento?
