I just had the same problem today, took it to smog right after leaving the repair shop from TA job and SC pulley/belt replacement. Came up as incomplete. Smog place told me to drive it another 50-60 miles and come back, hoping that fixes it.

You might want to invest in a carly or somethinf that will tell you readiness or you will be wasting time and money.

Just failed in MD with the same problem. Have already driven a couple 100 miles since my last oil change as its my daily. Guessing that I will have to switch back to stock ECU tune to make this happen. Luckily I got 2 months to do this. Exhaust has been OEM since Day 1.

I have the ess 625 kit with their full exhaust (high flow cats). Ess sent me their emissions tune which I loaded. It keeps red line at 5k. I've been driving around for about 50 miles trying to get the monitors ready. No CEL or SES lights. However its throwing a 27aa 27bb code. Which may have to do with the bigger injectors on this tune? who knows... Such a PIA. I'll keep checking Carly and driving in my past due registered car.

My car was bone stock and had the same problem.

Attention all M3 drivers, don't mod your car, cause it's bad

Man this is unfortunate, I'm sorry. Wish I had any advice to add, but I'm sure I'll be in this same boat in two years when it's time to smog mine in the Bay Area. Looking at the drive procedure for readiness, I wonder where in the HELL I can go for 15 minutes at 55mph...going to have to do it in the middle of the night around here I guess lol. Probably get pulled over for a DUI since it's all 65mph.

GL OP, hope you get it solved. My brother in law owns a smog shop and does some pretty high end cars, I'll ask him if there's anything else to try.

Hey Collin, thanks for the response but I got it smogged! It turns out my ambient temperature sensor was missing and it didn't throw any CEL or SES lights only showed when I scanned the car. Changed the sensor and within 10 minutes I passed all monitors.

Hey everyone, hate to bring up the post but i just failed emissions test today and they said its because of the new battery and asked me if i can do drive cycle and bring it back. But when i got home and checked my OBDII, everything seems to be OK. Could it be foxwell scanner(new) not working properly?
I will include the pictures down below
Thank you in advance

TBH, I went to California last summer and there was a lot of great places to eat, great scenery(beach!!!); obviously before COVID happen, but I am glad here in Ohio, I don't have to worry about all these rules & regulations that California have on Tuners & Car Enthusiast!! The crazy part is All of the shops that are available for tunes and Rod bearing jobs are out in California!! Go Figure Good luck to everyone in California with modded Ms!!!

I had this issue a while back where two smog shops said the system wasn't ready. 100% stock. All I did was go on a canyon run getting the car nice and hot 65 miles or so and the car passed just fine at the same place that said it wasn't ready.

The car is completely stock with just performance exhaust. I will go on a drive tomorrow and see if it will pass smog. Thank you

If your car is not ready just do canyon runs.

Or drive up and down the coast.

Start from SJ to half moon bay, up the coast to Pacifica and back down to SJ.

Works all the time.

ORRRRR enjoy the car to its fullest extent, and find a way to pass it.
I am catless and supercharged and it costs me $50 instead of $25.50 to pass my car for inspection each year. A great bargain if you ask me.

The likely answer is that you finished your drive cycle on the way back from the test. Readiness monitors are the most generic of generic OBD tests, so any monitor should read them correctly.

Since all your monitors appear to show ready, you should be able to go back.

Anyone have any ideas on why my secondary air doesn’t go green even though it does go green for the “since engine turned on” tab? Can not get it to go green on the “since last clearing”....

Are you performing the cold start long idle portion of the readiness cycle? The SAP helps heat up the cats and runs for about 90 seconds. It may be that the readiness cycle needs to isolate this function and won’t be satisfied if you start driving too soon.

It could also be that the pump or its plumbing is not working. I have not tried to troubleshoot one. There are SAP simulators available for other cars, but I do not know whether one would work on the E90M3.

I did let the car sit a day. And idled it for 3+ mins. I can hear the cold start as my exhaust gets loud. I feel as though I did it right because the secondary air goes green for “since last started”. But for some reason this doesn’t get logged in the “since last cleared” side of things.

If you haven’t tried already, and once warmed up, try idling at the end of a trip for 3+ minutes before shutting down.

Ok I’ve tried idling for 5 mins before drive and the secondary air goes green for the “since last started” category but refuses to turn the “since last cleared” green. I also idled after the drive for 7 mins....
