Can the M 220 style rims be refinished to OEM style?
I've got curb rash on each of my staggered M220 spoke 19" rims, I think the previous owner was pretty harsh on them.
I've thought about getting a new set, but I've only found them in gloss black https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-6...oy-rim-forged/. Can a rim repair shop refinish the surface for the OEM finish or should I just get a new set? |

They'll have a hell of a time with the paint in the pockets/barrel but if they onlt do the machined finish I think a good shop should be able to get close
But for how cheaply these sell used, I'd just look for a used set rather than go to all that trouble (and then run the rears square!)

They can re-finish them pretty close to OE style, but depending on how deep the curb rash is, the results may not be what you're looking for. Basically they grind the lip to be flat (remove the curb rash), then spray the face of the wheel with the color of the pockets/barrel, then they diamond cut the face of the wheel, then they clear everything. The finish is pretty close to OE, but you can tell it's at a lower precision level. Also, when they do the diamond cut, you lose some metal off the wheel. I'd probably only want a set of wheels to be re-finished this way once.
The other option is to target the rash areas, they grind them flat, then try to brush the metal so it kind of looks like the diamond cut (or find a silver that matches the diamond cut look, and paint). It's less intrusive, and looks okay form 5 feet, but if you get close to the wheel, you can tell where the repair was done. I've done the full refinish on a wheel on my wife's X3, and it's pretty good. The previous owner of my M3 did the spot re-finish on the M 220s...it looks better than curb rash, but you can tell where it was done. Prices seem to vary a lot of stuff like this region to region, but where I am, it's around $150/wheel for the full refinish and $75-100 for the spot treatment. If you can find a clean set used for not much more, I'd go that route...just depends. There was a wheeler dealer episode where they refinished some S2000 wheels. Here's some detail on the problem areas, each rim has about the same condition. Maybe it would be best to grab a clean used set? I'm pretty sure the previous owner parked by "feel"

Here's a picture of the wheel on the X3 I had fully refinished. I think it turned out well, but if you look closely at the lip you can see it's more squared off vs. rounded. The center cap also sticks out a bit more, since the face of the wheel was cut back some. I'll grab a shot of the spot repair on the M3 at some point to give you an idea of that too.

Here's some pictures of the touch-up method on my M 220s. They used paint to replicate the diamond cut metal.
And then here's a photo of an unfinished section. There's a difference when you get close, but again, from 5ft you really can't tell. It's hard to capture on with a picture, but on the first photo, about 3 inches down you can see the transition if you look close, but it does blend pretty well.
