Weird Electric issue, maybe throttle body actuators or ground issue?
Hi, I've had my E92 M3 for about 5 years and for the past few, very occasionally I would start the car up and it would be in full limp mode, throwing a dozen codes from airbags to (!) in red, etc.. I would typically turn the car off and on and it would be totally fine, no codes, so i knew it was something electronics based but its not a daily so it wasn't urgent. I finally got a code reader and had another episode (they're getting much more frequent). Here's what it spit out:
Multiple Restraint System 1 error 93D2: PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF LIGHT (POL) Engine Electronics 5 errors 2B57: ENGINE EMERGENCY PROGRAM ACTIVATED 2B2D: THROTTLE INITIALIZATION BANK 2 CDC0: THROTTLE VALVE ACTUATOR CAN MESSAGE BANK 2 2B15: THROTTLE VALVE CONTROLLER CONTROL UNIT BANK 1 2B22: THROTTLE VALVE ACTUATOR PRE-DRIVE-CHECK BANK 2 Dynamic Stability Control Mk60 1 error 5E19: 5E19 - CAN DME / DDE, ENGINE TORQUE NOT ADJUSTABLE. Instrument Cluster 4 errors A559: KL30G_F SHUTDOWN 931B: TEMPERATURE SENSOR 9319: ERROR SIGNAL TANK RAW DATA_FUELLING_LINKS 931A: ERROR SIGNAL TANK RAW DATA_FUELLING_RIGHT Driver's Side Footwell Module 6 errors 9CD5: COMMUNICATION WITH GURTBRINGER PASSENGER SIDE DISTURBED 9CD4: COMMUNICATION WITH GURTBRINGER DRIVER SIDE DISTURBED 9CB8: DEEP DISCHARGE PROTECTION OF THE BATTERY: DEACTIVATION OF PARKING LIGHT 9CB5: DEEP DISCHARGE BATTERY A8C6: DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS ON THE RIGHT ARE DEFECTIVE A8B7: RIGHT BRAKE LIGHT DEFECTIVE, PL3 FROM 07/14 AND SA5A1: FOG LIGHTS LED FAULTY, PL3 FROM 07/14 AND SA896: DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS HALOGEN RIGHT DEFECTIVE Obviously the throttle body actuators are a common issue and being referenced here, but there is a bunch of unrelated stuff being thrown too. Any thoughts? |

Will do, thank you. Does this not sound like a throttle body actuator issue to you? The only thing that gives me pause is about it being battery/alternator related is that startup isn't ever an issue (except for the occasional time I get the codes and limp mode)

I had cleared the codes and ran the car again and it threw the same issue. Here are the new fresh codes:

How long has it been since you replaced the car's battery?

These symptoms are typical of a dying battery.

I checked the cables and voltage this morning, all seems to be ok. I did realize that I never registered my new battery when I installed it two years ago and made sure to register it with Bimmerlink, and after restarting the car, I didn't get the same issue for a couple drives. It tends to come in and out so I'm not getting too hopeful yet but hopefully that nails it (would really surprise me)

Update - I checked battery connections and they were all OK. Car was fine for a few days, then threw some codes again. Same issue, limp mode right from startup with the following codes:
Engine Electronics 3 errors 2B2D: THROTTLE INITIALIZATION BANK 2 CDC0: THROTTLE VALVE ACTUATOR CAN MESSAGE BANK 2 2B57: ENGINE EMERGENCY PROGRAM ACTIVATED Dynamic Stability Control Mk60 1 error 5E19: 5E19 - CAN DME / DDE, ENGINE TORQUE NOT ADJUSTABLE. Driver's Side Footwell Module 1 error A8B7: RIGHT BRAKE LIGHT DEFECTIVE, PL3 FROM 07/14 AND SA5A1: FOG LIGHTS LED FAULTY, PL3 Happy to hear your thoughts... would prefer not to have to do actuators if not needed. |

Update: turns out my ground wire was touching on an aluminum brace just below it, causing a few of the wire strands to fray. I've since replaced with a new ground wire and made sure to wrap in electrical tape + bend away from touching anything and haven't had any issues so far. Thanks all for your help

Scratch that. Problem is back after about 10 starts. I'll have to take another look at the ground wire but I don't think that's the issue given it's new and was wrapped... I checked my battery status and after a short drive, the capacity is 91 Ah and state of charge was 67% (as per bimmerlink). The new codes are:
Engine Electronics 4 errors CDC0: THROTTLE VALVE ACTUATOR CAN MESSAGE BANK 2 2B57: ENGINE EMERGENCY PROGRAM ACTIVATED 2B2D: THROTTLE INITIALIZATION BANK 2 2B22: THROTTLE VALVE ACTUATOR PRE-DRIVE-CHECK BANK 2 Dynamic Stability Control Mk60 1 error 5E19: 5E19 - CAN DME / DDE, ENGINE TORQUE NOT ADJUSTABLE. Driver's Side Footwell Module 1 error A8B7: RIGHT BRAKE LIGHT DEFECTIVE, PL3 FROM 07/14 AND SA5A1: FOG LIGHTS LED FAULTY, PL3 FROM 07/14 AND SA896: DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS HALOGEN RIGHT DEFECTIVE Open to suggestions, looks like it's getting close to time to send it to the shop unfortunately. |

Bump - well, the battery died. Going to replace that this weekend and will report back with results. What’s the latest advice on battery specs to go for, I’m willing to pay more for something that lasts longer than a few winters parked indoors...

I spoke too soon. I replaced my battery 5 months ago (including coding it etc) and didn’t have an for about 3 months and it’s started again. Still happens at startup, either will:
1. Throw a code but not start in limp mode, or 2. Start in limp mode. If I turn off and back on the car, sometimes it all goes away, sometimes it starts back up in limp mode. It seems to be increasing in frequency. Here are the latest codes: 12 Motor electronics 4 errors 2B2D: Throttle Initialization Bank 2 CDC0: Throttle valve actuator CAN message Bank 2 2B57: Engine emergency program activated 2B15: Throttle valve controller Control unit Bank 1 29 Dynamic stability control MK60 E5 1 error 5E19: 5E19 - CAN DME / DDE, engine torque not adjustable. 29 ABSKWP 1 error 5E19: 5E19 - CAN DME / DDE, engine torque not adjustable. I’m starting to consider just doing the actuators, the 4500rpm limp mode I get and the total loss of power but only sometimes seems to pretty commonly be the actuators as per searches in this forum… open to any other suggestions. The issue is clearly the actuators.
