Rod Bearing Replacement. Not the phone call I was expecting

Hi all,

Following much deliberation and deciding to keep my M3 forever (now have a second car and just can't think of what I would want to replace it with) I decided to to get my rod bearings done.

After advice from the forum I decided to go with Bromspec to do the work and I have nothing but praise for Alistair.

So dropped the car of last night and Alistair said he would have it finished by this afternoon. Got a call this morning telling me to come get my car.

When I got there he showed me this photo of my cars bottom end.

Just as he was about to replace the bearings he noticed they had already been done, so told me to save my money it doesn't need to be done again.

It absolutely blows my mind that the previous owner didn't tell me as it is such a selling point and he could have asked for 1000's more for the car.
Has anyone else had this happen to them?

That's annoying but a pleasant surprise. I would almost go ahead and still change it anyhow since you don't know what or when it was done. He's got the car torn apart anyhow. At that point, it should be easy enough to replace it. I'm pretty sure he's still charging you for labor to tear that car apart. Unless your mechanic inspected all the bearings to be fine, I would still replace them. But that's just me...

Well that was unexpected!! I guess the questions are how many kms on the M3 now; and is there any way you can investigate when the replacements were installed?

What bearings/bolts were you intending to install and does that mean you might have a set for sale?!

Wow! That's a bonus. Can you contact the previous owner? If not, I guess you have to assume your car's RBs were done closer to 2020 than 2011.

The good news is I was able to get in contact with the previous owner today and found out that they are VAC bearings and ARP bolts which is what I was going to have installed anyway.

The added bonus is he had them installed 6 months before I bought the car so they have done 8k in total (car has 88k on the clock).

He just considered it required maintenance so didn't think to tell me, I honestly can't believe my luck!

Also big shout out to Bromspec for letting me know as soon as they noticed. There are tuners out there that aren't so honest.

JJH - Unfortunately I don't have a set for sale as Bromspec were providing the rods and bolts. They often have sets in stock if you are looking for some.

Either way probably the best free 'win' i have had with any car I have owned or modified.

To boot, Bromspec mentioned the engine and underside of the car is in great condition, this car is definitely a keeper!

That’s a great win for you. And no, I do not need a set but thought it was the question to ask!

A lot of the time when selling a car if you say as an example it has a new turbo, new radiator, new bearings it puts a flag up to some people to be worried about why it happened or if it caused any other issues (weather or not that it is a justified response)

That's a very good point. Maybe he was worried saying the engine had been cracked open would put people off.
For me though with an M3 it is a selling point!

It's good to hear there are workshops who are honest and do the right thing by the customer. This alone should encourage others in the area to go to them.

A lot of people don't like buying a car that's had engine work as they think it has happened for a reason or has other issues, so easier not to say anything

Not for the S65, it's a maintenance item.

In the case of S65 rod bearings, they are done for a reason: there is a chance, albeit a small one, that they could destroy your engine.

If you’re buying an E9x M3 and are ignorant to this potential issue, you haven’t done your research.

That's really good.....may I ask how much it's going to cost to replace the rod bearings in Sydney?
