I had the same 2-3 shift issue and motor mounts fixed it completely. Start there.

Does anyone know if AS makes an extend shift lever? After driving an F80, it was nice how well lined up your arm is with the lever. Seems like an extended lever coupled with a shorter throw percentage and the F10 M5 knob would make it exceptional.
May end up just emailing him. |

Think I might tackle this project in the spring - AS SSK plus upgraded carrier bushings. Anyone notice this from Turner yet? I think I might add it to the list:

Could anybody share the experience with
Rogue Engineering Delrin Carrier Bushings, Turner poly Shifter Arm Carrier Bushing and UUC Double Shear Selector Rod? Would all these together reduce some lateral play? Currently my car has 37k miles and the shifter play is similar to what the OP presented in his first video. I wonder if mods above would get me somewhere in the middle between this and the AS SSK? I don't neccesairly need shorter throws, just wanted more precision, so I thought maybe there is a way to improve the stock shifter without spending $400+ on a SSK. |

How about the bushings? Does the AS ssk come with their bushings?

Ok.
So is replacing just the bushings with poly / delrin on a stock shifter a noticable improvement, or a waste of time and the only way to achieve a precise shifter is to get the ssk?

I use Omega 690 red label Laptorr spec (75w80.) A bit expensive but significantly improves shifter feel.

The one I use is specifically ordered by the indy shop. The closest thing you will find it “omega 690 getrag”. You can get them at Rakuten.

Just curious as to what people are referring to when talking about notchiness. The original gearbox felt crunchy (like how my e39m5 w/ 180k miles feels like now when it's cold) going from first to second and second to third. Received a replacement and it felt great until maybe 500 miles later. Now I'm on the third gearbox and am wondering if I should replace the fluid with something other than factory fill. I replaced the shifting bits with original stuff when the third one went in...

The Delrin carrier bushings are the same thing in the ECS kit. Yes, they will help reduce play and last longer than stock. UUC DSS is a waste of money. No difference in feel or play from stock. I sold mine. The AS Shifter comes in 2 flavors - I got the stock-like 7% shift throw reduction. A 20% shorter shift kit is available too. Yes, you can improve the stock shifter - by doing everything listed on page 1 aside from the AS shifter. But the BIGGEST IMPROVEMENT was the AS shifter, you will never go back to stock. It's night and day better. |

My shifter play looks the same as yours in the video you posted after replacing the bushings. I was wondering if these harder delrin /poly bushings can be considered as an improvement over stock or just a replacement that is meant to last longer. To my understanding in my case the stock ones are still probably fine and changing them would not make things any better. I've heard you can have the auto solutions ssk set up to your preference, which seems great. I guess I'll just go with a weighted knob for now and get this kit some time later.

Great write up. I finally replaced my motor mounts and shifter bushings and boy its such a huge difference. Those two alone were all I needed to get the car back to a proper feeling shift. There was a half inch difference in thickness between the new and old mount that it made getting the exhaust back in tricky! I can say the motor mount replacement is one of the best improvements you can do to improve feel of the car.
