Alcantara ZHP Weighted Shift Knobs
*Let me give you some context* Back in 2019, I started what I’d call a passion project, where I made/sold premium high quality interior pieces for several bmw platforms with the primary goal of offering competitively priced OEM+ options for the type of enthusiast who is into that sort of thing. However, I’ve long since offered anything simply because I stepped back from the automotive scene for a time up until I bought my recently purchased E90 M3, and with that I’m left with an excess amount of premium materials from when I was offering those products. *reason for this post* While going through some stuff I had laying around I found these brand new ZHP weighted shift knobs that I had purchased (brand new from FCP Euro) about a year ago, that I had bought with the plan to rewrap in authentic Alcantara. Now I’m not saying that I’m the only person who has ever rewrapped these knobs, but I am the only person I’ve seen who has offered these wrapped in house, and shipped ready to install. To clarify, these aren’t covers, you WILL NOT need to do any work yourself minus simply swapping the knob out. I strip off the leather and sew/glue new authentic Alcantara material in its place. All that to say, I’d love to offer these Alcantara ZHP weighted knobs to this group, rather than have them sit in a box collecting dust. Brand new leather knobs range from $85-$95 + shipping, I figure with the time it takes to do this job plus the price of material, I’d offer them for $125 + probably like $7 for shipping (within the US) I’m well aware that this is a very high contact/point of wear for Alcantara material, but for those of you who are into unique high quality parts, thought I’d simply make the offer to this group, no need for negative comments if this isn’t something you’d be into. *side note* if you already have a ZHP weighted shift knob and are interested in this, I’d be more than happy to have you send yours my way, id rewrap it and ship it back to you, for a lower price 👍🏽 |

I will be starting the templating for the DCT boot likely this weekend, so no photos just yet, and as far as pricing goes, I will see what new OEM ones are going for and likely have similar prices, probably even a little cheaper as I don’t have new frames to glue the boots onto, but you can get an idea from that 👍🏽

Hello everyone! I wanted to post an update and let anyone who has been interested in a DCT shift boot that i started working on the templates this past weekend, so far I am very pleased with the results. I will post a number of photos very soon to let you guys see how its coming along. Very excited for everyone to see these! 👍🏽
Also, I just received an illuminated ZHP shift knob for the Alcantara re-wrap from an interested party, I will also document that process so anyone who has one and is interested can see what one actually looks like (as im unsure if anyone has taken on the re-wraps for the illuminated knobs, from what I understand Coby Wheel (the only other place ive seen Alcantara knobs) will not do the re-wraps on these illuminated ones). Stay tuned! |

As promised, here is the official update for those of you who are interested in the Alcantara DCT boots!
FYI: I will be making a dedicated forum post with "Alcantara DCT Shift Boots" as the title with an exact copy of this current update immediately after this, so if you see this again as a new forum discussion, its simply to let people know what's going on who may not have been interested in this "Alcantara ZHP Weighted Shift Knobs" post, so if they are interested in these, its easier than mixing up the topics 👍🏽 ----------------------------------------------------> Alright so this past weekend I finally got around to taking my old/worn OEM leather DCT boot out of my car. ** If you're unsure how to remove yours, simply squeeze around the edge of the boot to pop the frame out of the console, then once free, pull up on the knob till it pops off (be careful not to punch yourself in the face and also try not to yank the wires out) ** - Once I had my DCT knob/boot out of the car, I had to CAREFULLY figure out how it came apart. It will make a lot more sense if you look at the photos, but basically I had to delicately pry the shifter emblem out of the knob (it is only held in place with some adhesive BUT be very careful not to scratch the underside as the black is what keep the light underneath from shining through) - Once the emblem was off you'll see that light board underneath, and how its loosely just sitting in there, I was able to push the wires from underneath to allow room to get to the torx20 screw on top of the trim which, once removed, allows for the silver (or whatever color yours is) trim to be removed. - At this point I was able to see how the leather is simply pulled then glued to the actual knob and was able to start planning on how I was going to do the boot. NOTE: I realize now that I spaced and didn't actually take any photos of the knob once everything was off, but here is a photo of the leather pulled off to sorta give you an idea on how its attached/glued. - Once I had it all apart and was able to see what needed to happen. I laid out everything (minus the knob that the trim attaches to and the screw that holds it on) Here are the photos for that: NOTE: I ONLY de-pinned mine because I plan to paint my silver trim, as the silver has signs of fading/wear (you cannot simply pull the light board through the hole in the trim, it is not big enough, and I did NOT want to cut it to make room) understandably a bit over-kill, especially because I had completely taped the wires to paint it as is, but decided what the heck, the de-pinning took maybe 5 minutes and will make repainting 10x easier! ----------------------------------------------------> - At this point I have basically dialed in the templates needed to remake this design, I will insert photos below. However I want to briefly mention that the photos you're about to see are the ROUGH DRAFT of what the finally product will be. The ENTIRE goal for this initial rough draft was to figure out how to properly fit the Alcantara the same way as the OEM leather to mimic the OEM quality of this boot. So essentially I wanted to make sure I can tightly fit the Alcantara around the back without any slop/wrinkles, which I have accomplished. ** I am in no way bad mouthing the team over at COBY Wheel as they appear to offer very well priced alcantara options for several BMW platforms, however I did notice that their DCT shift boot for the E9X platform is not designed to flow onto the back of the knob like OEM BMW does, its simply cut off at the bottom of the knob which means you would have to cut & keep that old leather on the back of your knob and only have their Alcantara boot on the bottom. My design is an exact match to OEM BMW in that it completely covers the back of the knob, allowing for a true OEM+ fit & finish. ** - Again this is a rough draft attempt, the final design for these boots that will be offered will be properly attached to the frame, and I will install/take pics for better reference soon. These photos below are to attempt to show just how well my design works/looks with the integrated Alcantara material onto the back of the knob. ----------------------------------------------------> As of right now, if you're interested in one, or want more info, feel free to PM here, or for a faster response, DM me on my instagram: @e90anthony I hope that whoever is interested in one of these, likes what ive been able to do so far, and if you aren't interested in this, hopefully you can appreciate the level of detail and quality im aiming to achieve. I appreciate anyone who makes it through to this point, ill update this post again as soon as its all installed back into my car within the next few days! 👍🏽 |
