Has anyone done a Combox with telematics upgrade recently on E9x

I am debating between getting the Combox media or the telematics Version. I have spent countless hours researching and i am aware it's almost zero to Non possible to get a telematics Version registered by bmw. I am just curious if anyone has done that and was successful in getting the Combox Telematics Version up and running with bmw assist.

I am not even sure if this old telematics technology still works with today's bmw assist.

I have a feeling I may just get the Combox media version and forget about the telematics Version but if someone has done it or knows anything recent about that topics please do share. Thank you everyone for a great forum.

Stick with combox media, it’s really not worth the trouble of retrofitting combox Tcu just for assist. If you want to do something worthwhile retrofit nbt and you won’t have to retrofit combox media.

Thank you for your reply. Have you done a NBT upgrade?

Yeah I have Nbt in my car, Since I have a 2011.75 my car had combox media but with nbt it’s all intergrated into the headinit.

All you need is a coded harness, I bought an nbt HU and screen from a partout for $250 the harness was the only expensive part.

I went from TCU/MulfII. Other than Bimmer Retroshit sending me a bad combox, it wasn't to hard. The basis is condensing both plugs to one properly. Terminate one most and use one. Update the VO & year properly. That's it.

Buy a Telematics combox. You can buy them all day long for a $100. All you need to do is add -TELD to the VO and factory code the kombi. That will delete BMW assist from the car which is dead anyway.

I've heard of 2011.5 but not 2011.75. What production month(s) would 2011.75 be? My car is Feb 2011 production. Does that qualify?

Ok thats interesting. All I've seen about NBT installs on CIC cars involves dash removal, all sorts of modules and wiring going away, but you're saying its HU+screen+coded cable? That almost sounds easy. Could you provide more details? Was your HU pulled from a US-spec vehicle or overseas? Any stuff not working?

Do you still need the additional FAKRA adapter?

You don't need any of the farka adapters. Just rip off the plastic on the BT antenna cable and stick it directly into the combox. Leave the GSM antenna plugs empty. You can do the combox retrofit for $60 if you want to repin the connector.
