Track guys: I have Michelin tire questions

I have the 18s on my M3 sizes 255/40r18 and 275/40r18. I track my car as well as my Z. I actually have the same tire setup on my Z but it has Konig flow formed wheels. Weird, I know. Anyways the E90 I bought came with some crappy A/S tires and they will need to be changed.

How many have switched from the PSS*BMW to the PS4S and track their car? I hear a lot of reports of the PS4S having such a soft sidewall that it ends up being vague on track as well reports of it delaminating. I am assuming the PSS*BMW were designed by michelin to do decently well at the track. Is this true? I am yet to experience michelins as I have multiple cars so to stay in budget I have always gone with budget style summer/tracking tires.

Any opinions of real world testing on the PSS* vs the PS4S will be greatly appreciated.

Neither of those are a good track tire because they don't stand up to heat, and you should get something else.

Also I thought the PS4S is mostly a successor to the PSS and has replaced it, filling basically the same spot in its lineup

They are the jack of all trades master of none tire. It works very well and has decent pace for a few laps. PS4S is a great tire for 3-4 hot laps in a HPDE setting. After that, you will overheat them. FWIW, the Hankook RS4 feels like the same pace as the PS4S but can withstand beating all session.

Agree with Derbo, Hankook RS4 is what you need. Great at the track that lasts a long time and good enough around town. I will say though they are not as comfortable as the PS4S, but you know, you cant have it all.

I run PSS, 4 solid laps! 5th lap is cool down for a 20-minute session.

For the longer stints (open pit 40 min), I do 2 warmup laps, go hard 4 laps, and go into pits, then take anyone who wants to do ride alongs for a single push lap.

PS4S is the replacement for the PSS. Very similar in terms of performance with the PS4S having a slight edge.

As others have said and in my own experience, they aren't good track day tires. The Michelins will overheat quickly and you'll end up with greasy tires and lap times that deteriorate fast. Not to mention they will not last long at all on track.

Probably look at some tires in the 200tw class like RT660, RE71R and others. They'll last longer and they have much more grip.

Agreed. The 4S is a great tire. It's just not a great track tire. Look at anyone in the upper run groups (who really drives hard) and you won't see them.

sport cup 2's are great
toyo r888 are great, but dont last long

Ive had great luck with Nitto Nt01's. There is plenty of faster tires out there for sure. They are a old design tire. But they still peform well for there price point.
With smaller size tires that your running most ANY tires are gonna get hot real fast. These cars are not light! Think of the tires as heat sinks. The larger the better. Run a square set up and rotate them for best bang for the buck. Watch your cold and hot pressures as well. You can flip the tires if needed as well. Hope this helps.
