They replied to my email and confirmed that the job did in fact take 13 total hours to complete. I’m disappointed they didn’t offer any sort of recourse. Also, the shop owner mentioned that they don’t provide estimates because every job is a custom “one off.”

That's bad on their part. How can an hour or less of welding take almost 2 full work days. If it took somebody legitimately 13 hours to do that job they have no business welding or fixing cars.

I did this job myself, it took 3 hours max. DeansBimmer only charging $300 is a deal, i would not do this to someones car for only $300. Welding the shell took the longest. Sucks you had to pay for an expensive lesson.

They are lying for sure but since the job is complete and paid for, not surprised they didn't offer any sort of recourse.

We all take hits at one point or another. At least the end result is positive and you have an awesome sounding exhaust.

Took mine to a exhaust shop that hadn't done this mod specifically (2 pipe OEM). Sent them one of the YT videos for them to get a feel prior quotation. Around $400 done deal.
I'd educate your guys a bit with a couple of diy videos, if nothing else to make them feel bad. Because they should mate.

Ouch.. WAYYY to expensive for that mod, sorry to hear about your experience.

The good part is you're happy with the exhaust so I guess that's what really matters

Here’s the email. I redacted the shop’s name because I’m a nice person.

Quote:
We appreciate your input regarding our high quality workmanship and the cost involved in making it happen. Who among us has not had a “gulp” moment when notified of the unexpected high cost of work that we wanted done? One reason we don’t give estimates is that every job is a “one-off”. Customization takes time. Anyone can throw something together and cobble repairs. But it is and always will be our goal at XXXXX to do it right every time.

Remember, we opened up both sides of your muffler and welded each of those four pipes, both ends, all the way around to the other half. We then put the muffler panels back and welded those two big holes shut again. After that the welds were ground smooth for a clean look. Also, please note that the transitions from the old pipe to the new pipe have all been smooth-miter cut and butt-welded with no overlapping welds. Thus, it may have taken longer than others or, if they had to do it the same way, it may have taken less time than others.

Undoubtedly you came to our shop because you trusted us and had heard good things about us. We hope you will not let the cost of your specialized project prevent you from trusting us again in the future.

OP ...you really should state the shops name. If you could have known prior to going what they would charge, I'm sure you would have looked elsewhere or had more intent discussions.

Or what if you knew a shop did bad work...wouldn't you tell people?

My email to him-

Quote:
Hi XXXXX,

Thanks for email.

I appreciate that no two jobs are the same and there is variation in any project. It's the fact that (assuming a standard US work day of 8 hours), this project took over 1 and a half days of doing nothing but work; no breaks, no meals, etc. That's quite difficult to fathom. Most on the owners forum confirm the job should take <5 hours. Even including a buffer on the high end estimates leaves a substantial gap between the 13 hours.

You and your shop certainly won't hear anything disparaging from me as I have nothing but respect for your work. However, this situation is bizarre and disappointing.
The shop owner apparently took 13 hours w/o pause literally...? It’s an illustration of just how significant that amount of time is Here was his response-

Quote:
Just so you won’t worry about us working 13 hours straight through. We completed the work on your mufflers over several days. The guys use stop watches to time their work so a customer is never charged for work not done on his/her vehicle. We never estimate time.
Anyway, I’m not going to respond back after that. Not sure if he’s out of touch or being a jerk...

If they stretch the work over several days, then it counts up.
Each time to start (get tools and supplies ready) and stop (clean up) takes time.
Not sure why they would do it over a stretch of days.
That's a very straight forward task.
Imagine you change your spark plugs one by one. Each day another plug. It would take "forever".
Plus, I am chuckling at the picture of a mechanic with a stop watch, lol.

Anyway, lesson learned and I agree that there shouldn't be a problem naming the company.
This company feels like that it is justified.

And to be clear, they opened both sides ( top and bottom) of the muffler so they can weld all around.
Usually only the top side gets opened. At least that's my understanding
That is double the work right here.

Perhaps you can point them to the discussion here and they can name them self.
