InsideLine confirms the next gen M3 will be getting N55 engine?

From their test of the 1 series M Coupe:

I don't know. I think it may actually have a source that is trustworthy.

Very sad news for me, but true ... I got the same infos, the descision was made (early this week) and the innovation follows cost reduction fraction (3.2ltr. I6TTT) has won over the cost reduction follows innovation fraction (3.3ltr. V6TTT).

Bye bye BMW M for me!

Greets Uli_HH
P.S. ... Time to look for an EVO to hold it in my garage

Guys, lets just take this with a big grain of salt. Maybe more like hunk of salt, or even a big boulder. Actually I think it is expanding in size all the time and will soon be too big too fit on the surface of the earth. Look there - its now a farking planetoid or some geeky astro-shit.

Hey, while I do firmly believe the F32 M3 is getting an I6 turbo, the engine is most certainly not going to be N-anything. This article is akin to saying the next GTR is getting a Nissan VQ engine (which is the one you find in the Altima or Maxima).

Oh come on ... don´t tell us, the M-GmbH would build an completly new I6 engine ... this is not true ... all 4 engine alternatives between the descision was made are based on existing BMW or M engines ... because the engine has to fit an X4M and an X3M only the I6 based on the N55 and the V6 based on the S63 were shortlisted.

As said before the main and only advantage of the I6 derivate of the N55 over the V6 was Tradition and more that it was the far cheapest engine.
So none could beleave that the M-GmbH was developing an complete new engine ... simple because it´s too costly!

Yo - cool those jets down a bit, ok Uli?

You totally misunderstood me. Not sure if that was the language barrier or what. All I am saying is the the M3 engine will not be plucked straight from a series car like the 1M engine was. That's it. Will it be a completely bespoken engine? Hell no - its gonna share a bunch of parts with the corporate I6 (be that an N55, or something else we haven't seen yet), just like M's S63 V8 is based off the N63.

You're really on a roll these days. But I'm thankful, I've been wondering about appropriate terms for a comparison of "grain of salt" for ages.

Agreed, the S54 was based on AG engines as well, yet nobody had to worry. Won't be much different if they go for the inline-6.

Best regards,

V8 S65 Bi-turbo with some kind of a trick to either shut 4 cylinders off or an active M button as in M5, whatever improves MPG ratings.
THERE IS NO WAY M3 IS GOING TO N55.
But you know what, it's a win-win situation. If M goes to N55 then my car is a legend and if not, may be I'll consider it. It's all good.

N55 in the next m3???

From the Insideline dyno story of the 1M...

"So what do you say, fair IL reader? Is a small M car with boost the kind of car for which you hunger? Not that you really have a choice, as they're all headed this direction. In fact, contrary to what you've heard recently, we've got it on good authority that the next M3 is getting a hotted-up version of the N55..."
