Extended Warranty

Coming up to the 3 years soon.
I have just been quoted £951 for BMW Comprehensive Extended Warranty with breakdown cover and zero excess.

I thought thats not a bad price.
Anyone else coming to the 3 year mark?

Wow, that's a lot of money and presumably just for a one year extension? My 3years is up in July and I'm debating with myself whether it's worth taking the extended warranty... at that price I might not, but if I don't, you can be sure as soon as August comes, it'll need extensive expensive work

I only do about 4,000 miles a year and haven't had any major problems with the car at all... yet.

I justify the car to myself (and the wife) on the following basis...

Insurance: £400 a year
Road Tax: £410 a year
Petrol: £840 (approx.)
Servicing: £400 (approx.)

Total: £2050, which equates to about £171 a month.

In general, I'm not a big fan of insurances, and adding another £80 to that monthly total is hard for me to justify. I'm thinking instead to put the extra money in the bank and hope not to have a serious problem for a very long time.

Dar don't be daft. If £80 is pushing the budget then (Im not gonna say it)

On the other hand if you have a headlight failure a new unit is £1300
A wing mirror is £900

God knows what a replacement engine should you have a catastrophic failure.

Do the smart thing and get the warranty. You can pay monthly.

It's not that £80 a month would be 'pushing the budget', just that I'd prefer to keep my hands on that £80 a month than give it away on the off chance of something bad happening to my M3. Most of us are in cost cutting mode right now, but I certainly don't need or intend to sell the car!

You talk of headlight and wing mirror failures, but on all the cars I've ever owned, I've never had 'failures' on such items other than bulbs and having a wing mirror knocked off - neither of which would be covered by my £951 a year extended warranty.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I suspect paying monthly pushes the premium up even further, one reason I always pay my insurances as a one off payment each year.

As I said before, I just have a deep dislike of insurance in general, paying out on the off chance that something bad might happen. I guess where the M3 is concerned, cars are only just beginning to reach 3years old so there aren't really any long-term statistics on reliability. That said, I would hope that a 'quality' brand like BMW would be built to last a bit longer than 3years. I just resent having to pay BMW a grand EVERY year that I own the car to protect me against their engineering.

Clearly some people do more miles in one year than I have on my car in 3years and for them I can see it makes perfect sense to cover themselves.

But I'll await to receive my quote from BMW in due course, and then way up my options - I'd certainly like to keep their breakdown/recovery cover assuming doing so also extends the Google 'send to car' feature.

Yes that cost is for one year. You can pay monthly at £87/month.
I am doing around 16,000 miles a year. I must admit so far the car has been very reliable but to be honest I don't think I would take the risk of not having the extended warranty.

I can see on that mileage it makes sense to take the cover,... 300miles a week, compared to my average of 75miles a week.

Yearly mileage varies for me depending on work ... last year 16K but I guess average is around 12K.

I can understand why if you are doing 75 miles a week you would decide not to go for it.

Ok, so with an excess of £250, the annual price looks a little better. Though knowing my luck, being an E93, the starting prices will be even higher.

extended warranty

Hi All
sorry haven't put many posts recently
my 3 year warranty is up in September so and I was speaking to BMW in Staffs today. Extended warranty has to be done thru BMW Finance true?
Figures are varying by for an E93 M3 the figure of 850 is not too bad at all
I was being quoted more like £1400

With any extended warranty check it against any non BMW aftermarket modifications you may have done before you go ahead, read that small print!

Hi, new guy here, just my thoughts on the BMW warranty.
If you are under 60k miles the warranty is much cheaper. I was on 59k when I got a BMW warranty. Fully comp with no excess, I decided to pay monthly because the liklihood of BMW changing the monthly payment next year when I am past 60k miles is relatively low as a lot of other M3's owners has verified. I pay £113 a month, which is pretty expensive, but I dont want to be shelling out thousands if/when something goes wrong. Plus its useful to sort out any minor niggles that occur. Just drop it off at BMW and get it all sorted free of charge.

£951 is pretty good value , I am sure a standard 3 series isn' t much less ? I have just been quoted £4k for the Fezza ! These type of performance cars will be expensive if something does go wrong .. get that direct debit set up !

Coming up to the 3 year mark next month, and have agonised over the samething. I've only had one mechanical thing go wrong with mine, which was a faulty paddle. Thankfully that and the software problems I had last year were all done under the factory warranty. I got the bills for them and they add up to aprrox £1k....taking into account labour charges as well.

I just know that if i go down the route of not going extended, then sure enough something major will go wrong and a massive bill will land on my lap! I dont want to then try and repair it using cheap parts etc. The car is far far better than that and doesnt derserve it!

I'm going down the zero excess route, and i think 80% of that is buying me "piece of mind" insurance and the other 20% is for when things actually do go wrong, which they will, no matter how small or big.

I've heard that if the engine does go completely, to replace it is around the £5-7K mark that said, the BMW engine is legendary in its bomb proof build quality.......apparently and fingers crossed.

Ultimately we all work hard for our toys and it would be an injustice not to look afer them

Received my extended warranty 'invitation' in the post yesterday - my car will be 3years old on 19th July.

The letter provides an illustrative example,...

A BMW M3 with a mileage of 50,000 miles, an excess of £100 and including BMW Emergency Service.
  • Comprehensive = £835
  • Named Component = £706
  • DriveLine = £557

On reading the above I thought to myself "well at least mine will cost less than that as I've only done 15,000 miles".

Wrong

It doesn't matter how low your mileage is - the warranty cost is the same right up to 60,000 miles

Not happy about that and now need to think seriously whether to go for it, or take the risk especially given the low mileage of my car.

Also interesting is that based on other posts in this thread the warranty cost is the same for the Convertible and the Coupe.

I went for the Comprehensive option with zero excess. Paying £87/month.

I had a problem with the drivers electric seat backrest width and lumbar support adjustment not working. Took into the local dealer and all sorted on the extended warranty (no warranty and I would have been looking at a £250 bill!).

My turn to arrive at the end of the manufacturer 3yr warranty.. got my invite in the post..

Cheked prices online for BMW
- 0 excess = 1135 annual or 113/month
- 100 excess = 984 or 90/month
- 250 excess = 796 or 73/month

Emergency service is an additional 101 pounds/year, 9/month
My m3 has less than 30k miles fwiw.

I find it rather expensive.. but could live with it. My main concern is that the "vehicle is not modified in ANY way". Which is not at the moment but i dream about an akra/other exhaust.. and upgrading brakes with some better pads/fluid/hoses. Any idea if these are deemed to be consumables so i can fit whatever i want.. or not ?

I had a quick look at alternative insurance policies which would get around that issue but have potential less coverage :

Warranty direct seems to be quoting 1007 with some basic UK recovery similar to BMW (the one without the emergency service), but misterious excess.. nothing to be found on the website on the matter. Main things missing seem to be cover for all in-car entertainment systems & some engine components :

- Lamps & xenon discharge, batteries, fuses, and connectors, in-car audio and entertainment systems or navigational systems.
- Exhaust gasket, exhaust pipes, catalytic converter, auxiliary drive belts, brackets, mountings, pipes and hoses, water ingress, cables other than clutch cables.
- Notwithstanding exclusion 11 of the policy, this covers the cylinder head gasket and seal or gasket replacement that necessitates the removal of the engine, gearbox/drive unit or differential unit to carry out repairs (this sounds more targeted at Porsche than us..).

I think some components you can "force" them to include them into the policy in writing.. but would need to check with them.

AA seem to cover more "engine" but similarly excludes incar entertainment system, abs.. xenons.. etc.. you can only opt back for abs, AC and catalytic converter..

Any thoughts ? what did you guys end up going for ? Anybody ever made a claim with aftermarket exhaust / pads or other ?

Best,

R

I ran for five years with an extended warranty on my E46 M3. In that time I had numerous things done form coil packs to a new clutch and flywheel. Also consider that the breakdown service is pretty much one of the best (Yep I've used it!) and it looks like a much better deal.

When my e93 warranty is up I'll be using the service, but at some point you have to consider if it wouldn't be better keeping the ~1k for incidental repairs when they happen.
