So I ran over a blade of some sort with my left rear tire and was told the hole was too big to patch and I needed to replace it. The tread was 6/32 and tire was a PS4. I'm being told by the tire shop that it's ok to just replace the one tire ( as opposed to both rears), however the PS4 is on back order and they were told it will be 4-6 weeks. They are prorating the price and giving me around $100 off the tire.

I'm currently using my winters on the rear of the car as it's my daily. They suggested just replacing the tire with a PSS which they can get in a few days. So the question is will having one rear tire be a PS4 and the other a PSS potentially damage the rear diff or cause any other problems? And are they correct that the tread depth difference between the old and new tire will not be an issue as well (assuming the other rear tire is also 6/32)? Money is tight right now so I'd rather not buy 2 tires unless I must.

search ebay for a used tire. no point in a new full tread tire that won't be what you want.

I'd sooner ran a rear PSS / front PS4S than run winters and summers mixed

I am big on running different tires front and back and have a lot of experience doing so on the track.

However, I never tempted to run two different tires in the same axle. The PS4s is a better tire in the rain, so in wet conditions it could create an issue. The diff only care if the two diameters are different. I am not sure if there is a difference, and if there is it would be significant enough.

On dry pavement the traction between the ps4 and pss would be practically the same on the street.

If money is tight, look for two rears (ps4s or pss) on ebay, which I have done many times.

A patched tire on the inside will be $100-120 and is fine for a short duration. I only keep these for 2 or 3 trackdays. But on the street over many months I am not sure how well the patch would hold.

I am giving you options but not qualified to give you advice

This. You won't have any mechanical issues from running the same size PSS/PS4S across the same axle.

I'd check eBay, you should easily be able to find a used tire.

Had to run mismatch PSS and PS4 on the rear with no issues.

Based on personal testing, the PSS warms up somewhat quicker, so take it easy on that on-ramp sweeper if the PS4 is on the rear right.
