Costco gas if I have time and am passing by one.

Otherwise, Chevron or Shell for the most part.

used to use BP/Amoco all the time. But I switched to Shell when the gas gauge on our E39 wouldn't go all the way to FULL because of build up! Perhaps another reason i avoided BP was the Deepwater Horizon incident - had BP stock at the time
But I've had totally consistent performance with Vpower

As a general rule I fill up wherever is most convenient. 93 octane gasoline does not vary much from one brand to another, and the difference in price from one station to another over 12 to 14 gallons is less than $2, which is worth less than the time and gas wasted looking for a cheaper price or waiting in line at Costco.

I do avoid both Citgo and Valero, since they are Venezuelan-owned, as well as BP (oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico).

What's the deal with Costco fuel? I see a lot of people mentioning it. There's one a mile or so down the road from me.

It tends to be relatively cheap. But you have to wait in line for it most places.

Valero is a publicly traded company based in San Antonio TX. It is not Venezuelan-owned like Citgo is...

San Antonio refiners Valero Energy Corp. and Tesoro Corp. are listed among two possible bidders for Citgo Petroleum Corp. in a deal, which some people say could fetch up to $10 billion for Venezuela’s state-run oil company PDVSA, Reuters reported Wednesday.

Many Citgo stations are rebranding themselves as Valero, but continue to sell Venezuelan-derived fuel.

Ive had good luck using Costco gas. I once fueled up using a ma and pa stations 93 and the car pinged like a mother (sounded like the same clacking you hear when pulling an aluminum extension ladder up taller). Probably was not 93 oct even though it was labeled as such. To the previous posts point, top tier is real and just means better quality control and additives. Id say no noticeable dif between costco, shell or chevron 93.

Yes they may be trying to buy some assets from Citgo as Venezuela crumbles but they are not Venezuelan-owned... Citgo is the downstream arm of PDVSA here in the US. PDVSA and the Venezuelan government are defaulting on their debt so the assets are for sale. This does not make VLO a Venezuelan company.

And Citgo is not the only oil company that buys oil from Venezuela. If that's the basis for you choice (which I have no problem with!) then there plenty others you will have to stop buying gas from. For one, Chevron also has a joint venture with PDVSA and imports oil from Venezuela.

But the sale of gasoline made from PDVSA crude does feed the Venezuelan government...

Fair enough. Then we better start researching all the companies that buy oil from Venezuela...

I'm curious though what brand and type do others use ? Also in states that allow it - do you have access to above 92 octane ?

And one other item - I also tried using ethanol free gasoline, which is horribly expensive since there not adding the ethanol - and to be honest, it didn't seem all that great ?

Thank you,

Chevron. It has Techron. Techron is the real deal. Bmw fuel system cleaner is just Techron. Period.

Have empirically logged timing on 91 gas with the major gasoline brands. Full throttle rpm spark timing with Chevron is closest to targets, followed by a tie between Costco and Shell. 76 in CA has been the worst. Also BMW branded fuel system cleaner is rebranded Techron, so Chevron gas provides the best of all worlds

Here in jersey we get the 93 octane jungle juice. I did run out of gas once at the track and put 100 octane in. That was awesome.

There is an Exxon next to my house I visit, sometimes BP. Mostly it's all refined the same with different additives. I've never felt any difference from any top tier brand.

Do also consider that Castrol used to be partners with BMW, and so that's the brand recommended in the manual (BP). Now it's shell. Makes no difference.

I pick a brand and stay static w it. Have been utilizing Chevron for a long, long time now. (Other then emergency instances in middle of nowhere and need fill up).

Hate to break all your hearts ; but unless gas station has pumps with dedicated outputs on each grade of gas, you are most definitely going to get a hint of w/e previous customer was utilizing. Just saying , not something to split hairs over.
