Wheel offset, spacers and chassis geometory

How important is it to stick with the OEM wheels offset? The reason behind my question is, not all wheels (i.e. BMW) offset are the same. Does this mean when a car is tested for suspension geometory, balance, handling etc, the offset of a specific wheel contributes to the final configuration and stability?

Using wheels spacers on the ///3 is a popular modification on this board, and more often this results in the changes of the offset. Members have used 18/15 for a neutral offset across the car, but doing so, doesn't it change the handling behavior of the car, and result in placing some undue stress on the wheel bearing at least.

I am no technical expert when it comes to suspension and chassis, but these question keep coming up every time I decided to put on the 10/10 RE spacers on my car.

BMW have spent countless hours testing the car on the 'Ring honing its handling but we're quick to install spacers for what I think are aesthetical reasons rather than to improve handling.

I would like to hear from experienced drivers, forum sponsors/vendors, and any experts on wheels, chassis and suspensions to contribute to this questions.

I am sure like me, there will be at least a handful on this forum who would have thought about the negative impacts of spacers and decided against.
