7 dead in east coast street race

Gaines said she grabbed her child but could not help her father, William Gaines Sr., 61.

A white sedan hit people standing on the side of Route 210 around 3:40 a.m.,

Good advice. But just to clarify, the cars that were racing didn't hit anyone. It was another car, apparently with its lights off, hit the crowd as they walked onto the street where the starting point was, obscured by the smoke from the tires.

True, but if there wasn't anybody racing to begin with 50 plus people wouldn't be in the middle of a 55MPH road at 3:30 AM.

If your racing and you kill yourself than fine, but more and more we are hearing about bystanders being affected by this stupidity.

the police can't confirm that the lights were off and the person making that statement is the same dumbass lady who had a kid and a father with a broken leg with her to watch an illegal street race on a public highway at 3:40AM. Sorry if don't put a whole lot of faith in her statements.

btw, i live no more than 20 mins from where this took place, but with the people that live here, i'm not suprised by any of this story. not the racing, the idiots on the road, or the other idiot that as you said barreled through the smoke when they should have been on the brakes.

So 8 dead, including three ages 42, 33, and 61. Guess this shows you can't stereotype street racing as the activity of young kids.

This is a terrible event; but a stupid move by everyone... including the racers and the spectators.

first of all why would you slow down? It was white smoke and probably looked like a patch of fog which BTW few people slow down for. Who is going to think that there are going to be people standing in the middle of the highway at 3 in the morning?

second of all, if you're traveling the speed limit on the highway, which appears to be 55, you are traveling 80 feet a second. In a split second you've already hit the crowd you couldn't see and which had no business being there let's not forget and have had no time to react until it's too late and people are already dead. Again, who is going to think that there are going to be people standing in the middle of the highway at 3 in the morning? Think a little more before you make uneducated statements like that.

The only person I feel sorry for is the poor guy who hit those people, he is the true victim here. Unless the facts change, he was traveling down the highway obeying the law and now has to live with outcome of an event caused by dumb fucks who didn't have enough sense to not stand in the middle of a road in the middle of night.
