OP - I can't be much help as I didn't buy my first M3 until my kids were 8 and 6. Plus I have an E90! I can share a story that will make you feel a bit better...

In late '03 we were living in Toronto and I picked up an almost new 911 C4S. My wife was pregnant and I didn't tell her about the purchase until she came to the parking garage and said "who parked that car in our spot". But that's another story...

Then we closed on a house in mid'04 and did some renovations, including building an odd tandem garage 2 cars deep by 1.5 cars wide for the porsche and my wife's A4 avant. Almost considered a lift too but couldn't figure out permit/zoning!

All was great until my boss called in middle of that winter and said move to NYC... We eventually agreed but not before selling BOTH cars - took a big hit including losing full tax shield as outright sale not trade. Turns out selling a porsche in january in 2ft of snow isn't ideal either.

Now that you are feeling a bit better, I'll tell you we dropped our kids off at camp saturday and flew to europe to pick up our new F80 and we are 3 days into our alps driving tour and are relaxing in Lienz before heading up the Grossglockner pass in the morning

Our baby is due in about a month....I sold the M3 not because of the baby expenses, or concerns of a car seat...but because we need to buy a house soon. THAT'S more a reason to sell an M3 !

….now i'm looking for a house and an SUV

Sell it. Its just a car. You can get another one when the time is right or when your situation is better. Family first. M3s aren't rare lol.

Just to update everyone who took the time to provide recommendations, we ultimately wound up trading in the M3 towards an Audi RS3.

After thinking a lot more about it, we found that we wanted to keep one fun, practical car for living in the city. I wanted something that would still be good for late-night drives to clear my head and enjoyable on road trips. I thought about an e90, and came close to getting one, but wanted something a bit more modern that would deal with the snow we get a little better than the M3. Last year I was on snow tires for almost half the year.

So far, I like it.

When my kid turned 5, she wanted us to buy E93, and that is what we bought.

I am also IL Blue and I love rolling up to my kids school with the top down and the harrop supercharger blaring with two car seats in the back. You can have it all.

The RS3 isn't a bad choice, particularly if your M3 had the DCT. Like the M3, the RS3 has a fairly unique engine. Having sat in a number of current A3-based cars, I just can't get over how small it is. I feel like the back of the e92 is roomier, though more difficult to access.

I advise would have been to use the Accord and store the M3 outside of the city. Maybe drive it once every 2-3 months. But keep it around. An RS3 wouldn't have been my choice, but you could have done a lot worse---like a Q5 or other SUV. :-)

My kids are past car seats and the protocol for forward vs rear facing has changedl. Here is the newest thread I could find. It is for the M5 but the major brands are mentioned. If you can try and fit one in the car first. What are your main concerns?

We use this seat and base....it fits the E90 platform nicely using the factory latch points and the front seat still has room (for the sedan at least). It works well in most vehicles and incredibly sturdy, especially with the base foot extension feature.

My wife is pregnant. We will be moving to downtown Toronto while she takes 18 months of mat leave, and only keeping one car. We can either keep the m3 coupe, or keep her Honda Accord hybrid.

Now, the hybrid is obviously the more practical choice as an only car in the city. It costs about 1/3 of the m3 cost in gas and maintenance to drive anywhere, has rear doors to access child seats, shorter doors to not hit objects when putting kids into child seats; Cheaper wheel costs when my wife hits curbs (not infrequently); as safe as the m3 if not safer; i'd care a lot less if it gets dinged and scratched up by cyclists who are annoyed that you're trying to make a right hand turn downtown. Surprisingly, it doesn't suck to drive. Overall, I could live with it. The lower costs would also be better for us, as we're still a young couple who should be dumping more into savings, and also we will have daycare costs a couple years from now.

But the M3 is.... the M3. It's the car I wanted for ~8 years before I could get it. I don't know about my odds of finding another clean Interlagalos blue (my favourite colour) when we move out to suburbia in a couple years.

If I keep the M3, I'm doing the rod bearings soon. If not, I'll drive it as it is and sell at the end of the summer (with about 6 months of aftermarket warranty left).

Those of you who have tried to have an m3 coupe as the only family car (with infant) in the city, is it feasible?

Or should I just grow up and accept that my M3 life is over... for now?

An alternative is to try to swap for an e90. Thoughts on that are welcome too.
Swap for a 2011 e90, slick top, DCT. ///M Baby seat + 9lb baby (avg) = roughy 15lb so make sure you find one with a carbon boot lid to make up for the added weight. If you get twins you might want to go with a lithium battery to cut more weight off the rear and add a carbon wing, after all you are going to be a family ///Man now. Be responsible!

OP hasn't replied in a year....

as an aside, I grew up in the back seat of a 930 911, my dad bought it new in 86 and has owned it ever since.

As much as that car was a pain in the ass, I got a lot out of seeing my dad passionate about something. Kids learn by example more than anything else, and seeing parents (especially fathers) passionate about something is good for development.

I wouldn't have liked to see my dad as a defeated man who sold his beloved.

swap it for a e90 m3 and never look back. I have a 4year old currently and he loves Dad's weekend ride. A 4 door m3 in a metro setting is more practical than you think.
