Started the M3 after 2 weeks of no driving !
This thread will probably be deleted since it holds zero value but Im gonna share my experience anyway!
I was away on a business trip for 2 weeks so no one drove the M3 sitting in the garage. When I came back, the following morning I started it up to hit the gym. The way the engine started re-defines cold starts! (Keep in mind I have the OEM EXHAUST MOD and INTAKE by MS). Anyway, when I hit the start button, the engine was so damn loud that it had three different stages till the oil circulated. First stage was so loud that my neighbor for the first time walked over and asked if everything way alright haha sounded like I had no exhaust at all The second stage it sounded like a normal cold start but still very loud, like I had some aftermarket exhaust then finally she started to simmer down after a whopping 2 minutes of M chaos! Anyway I was just really excited to hear my car make all these interesting noises for the first time ever lol and this is my second M3 |

Side note: I was pretty scared when I started it up for the first time, no joke

Even though I have the cold start deleted with my BPM s2 tune, it still rumbles and shakes my whole house on a cold start. God I love my M3...

Interesting that you had that after two weeks of not driving. I recently came back from a 5 week holiday and it started just a easy and with the same sound as when I drive it on a daily basis.

I've left mine for 4 months during winter too. When doing a cold start like that, I usually turn the car on before turning the engine over so that all the electrical systems and fuel pump are primed.
With my borla on, especially on a cool fall morning, the car definitely shakes my house.

I'm glad for this post. It's been almost 8 days since I've seen my new ///M3 and I can't wait to drive it. Are you guys using a battery tender for your long jaunts? I use one myself. Cheers.

I put a new battery in mine in May, and then last week after being away on business for 5 days (and unable to hook up my regularly used tender) it wouldn't start at all. I had to jump it, and it took 3-5 minutes of idling the donor car before I could get it to turn over. (08 E92 with 20k miles)
I don't know if this means possibly a bad battery from May? That's the longest it's ever sat without the tender but I did not expect it to be completely drained. Reading this thread it sounds like it's kind of unusual for 5 days to cause that on a brand new battery. I haven't had any other issues since jumping it that day, and driving for half an hour to charge things back up. |

I used to have battery issues till the tender. Now, I'm still on the original battery six years later.

Any engineers on here who can explain what actually causes "cold start" to be so loud? Is there a by-pass valve that opens? What changes to cause the exhaust to go from open to closed. I realize the computer creates a rich state of mixture when cold and leans out as it warms up but I'd like an explanation as to why the exhaust has to be so loud that my wife asks if I installed a competition exhaust.

I am touring EU for last 2 weeks and reading this post makes me miss my E92s so much. Driving shitty EU econoboxes is no fun. Seriously.
