I still want a s2000. Timeless. I would go e92 M3 and not look back. They have 4 real seats and are better looking IMO than e90, although less rare. It's way bigger and more comfy than a s2000 but still feels like a race car when you drive it like you stole it. It also has real power at the top end. The v8 is an all time great.

E46 is more like an s2000. Smaller, nimble, raw, vintage good looks, not as fast. I would pass.

You have to really love the E46 for intangible reasons to justify buying one over the next generation especially now that they are comparable in price. Don't be fooled by the cheap E46's, doesn't matter if its 10k or 20k... they all turn into 25k cars at least lol. M3F is a great community though, you'll find very knowledgable and passionate owners on that end, more so than here.
I love the Z4M. Did it give you problems? An aside, the roadster is a better car than an E46 and also cheaper holding condition equal.
And its got CSL running gear with top down driving

Everyone whines about the extra weight of the E9X but I will take 100lb more every day of the week and twice on sunday if it is a solid vehicle, which is the case on the E9X

Over on M3Post I have like 6 DIY's addressing stuff on the E46M... I had one for 100k, I still like them, but at equal price to an E9X never ever ever

BMW didn't take chassis seriously until the E9X generation. The front and rear subframes of the E9X are little works of art... the E46 one seems like an afterthought, it isn't surprising that people end up ripping the entire thing off the car.
Even from the E9X to the F8X you can see significant improvements in the front end's reinforcements, however, as the E9X doesn't have any issues it isn't such a big deal.

The other day BMW released some pics of the front end reinforcements on their next gen M cars and holy shit! WOW!

Indeed!! The number of hours I had to spend stressing and fromt end strut tower issues on my e36 was a real PITA.

E46 are not much better, and arguably the rear subframe issues are worse. It’s certainly not the end of the world though, as a good shop knows how to correct it.

In the thread below i shared my opinion of three of the OP's cars being considered. Just another opinion to ponder...

Your price point is way too low for clean e46 M3s. $17,000 is what the hoopties are worth.

Clean ones (at least coupes) are at least $25,000, more likely $30,000, and can go far up from there.

So, I think you have a self selection issue-- you're looking at $17,000 e46 M3s and nobody with a $30,000 car is going to price it at $17,000.

You're not going to find any nice e46 M3s at $17,000, regardless of how long you look-- that's not what they're worth.
