Bluetooth Quirks: Holding On To The Last Track

Cheers, my friends.

I use an Android Pixel 3 to connect via bluetooth to the stereo on my 2011 E93 and initially, it works great. After I turn off the car, get out and wander around for a bit, then re-enter and start the car, things get a bit funky.

No matter what I do with my phone, the bluetooth keeps the last app and song played on screen. I cannot get it to change to the current app open (Spotify, Pandora, MixCloud, podcasts etc), it is just stuck on what was playing previously.

Is this a common experience? Do you have a tip/trick to get the connection to utilize the app open and playing music on the phone?

Thank you for your help!
