Had a neat conversation about my M3 Today
I was meeting one of my European clients for lunch today and afterward we got to talking about cars. Back in Europe he has a Ferrari 430 Scuderia and an FF and I mentioned my M3. He had a very excited reaction and we started talking about our track experiences with the cars.
What I thought was neat about the conversation is that his reaction was genuine about the M3. Even though he had cars that were clearly on a different level, the M3 had cache with him to the point that we could have a nice conversation as car enthusiasts; I had not really expected that. What I also thought was neat when thinking about it more afterward was it is not strictly about the cost of the cars. There are cars out there that cost twice as much as my M3, but do not have the same reputation with the sports car crowd. Anyway, thought I would share a brief story on a Friday afternoon before finishing the day. |

my boss had a 360 spyder and let me drive it a few times. the #s are exactly the same (look it up) and i think the M3 is a better car. now the 430 scud, that is indeed on another level, but the M3 is no slouch. even stock.

my friday story didnt go quite as well lol... coworker let me know his car "would smoke me" because "it has almost 400 hp and its a benz made to go fast" - its an e550 coupe.
coworker proceeded to let me know he found bmw drivers to be "douchey" and the cars themselves are also "douchey". I helped him come to his senses by reminding him his license plate says 'itssik' and hes in his 40's (no knock on 40+ year olds, just that combined with the license plate ). sorry to thread jack - just glad other people out there recognize the m3 for what it is and know its a street car that can hold its own on a race track better than virtually any other production car!

good story. This is what you do, make friends with him. As commonly known, M3 drivers have no friends, when ppl like this come along, make friends....

straight line maybe but i would think a large margin of people reading on this forum would consider speed on a track a better representation of the car's ability so on that level he would have a very tough time
agree with someone above though... make friends with the ferrari fella op! could be in for some good weekend track fun with him and his friends!

I ran from a roll (~60 - 120) against a TT E550 cabriolet (402hp/ 443lb-ft) which is 200+ pounds heavier than the coupe and I beat him decisively, but not by that much. I have dinan pulley an ESS tune as mods. To be honest I was surprised.

Great story! It's always nice when someone who obviously can afford much more car, still appreciates the ones that don't cost nearly as much.
On a side note, whenever one of my coworkers or someone at a coffee & cars starts boasting about how their car is so much faster than my M, I usually just say that they probably are...it's much easier. Besides, if anyone bought the M3 to get the fastest car they could afford, you bought it for the wrong reason! There is a lot of competition between cars in the M3's price range. |

Agree with the comments on track. My last car was a 485bhp RS4 which was very well set up, with Bilstein suspension and upgraded brakes. I went to Spa last year and was well beaten on track, by a couple of E92 M3's! It was my 32nd track day, so I was no novice.
Subsequently I came back and now have an E90. I am going back to Spa in October, to drive it how it was designed to be driven! They do handle very well indeed when pushed to the limit, which cannot be done on our roads. |

I think this car really does garner a lot of (deserved) respect. One of my good friends went from an '09 E93 up to a 2012 911 Turbo S, and every time we ride in my car he comments on how much he loves and respects the M3, for quality, performance, fit and finish, and so on.
