2011 E90 M3 vs 2012 CLS63 AMG

These are the two cars I\'ve come down to. Let me get this out to everyone: the CLS63 AMG is a lot of car. I test drove it in comfort and hit 80 mph on the highway in less than 6 sec, apparently 0-60 in 4.0. It sure feels faster than an M3 though and it handles just as well. It isn\'t as compact as the M3 though and can be felt around the corners.
Looks: M3 = CLS63
Handling: M3 > CLS63
Acceleration: CLS >
Power: CLS >
Comfort: CLS >
Interior Quality: CLS >
Price: M3>
Safety: CLS> That thing\'s filled with all kinds of safety features. Lane warnings, slows down if you near a car really quickly, and others.

What do you guys think?

I think you would be THE MAN if you tracked that CLS. One question, and its not specific to you or your thread. If enough people say M3, or CLS, does one then go and buy that car? Is there a CLS forum somewhere you are asking the same question?

No, I only use bimmerpost. But I want to know people's input on the AMG's. This is the first AMG I've ever driven.

Definitely go with cls63 amg if you can afford it. It is definitely faster and more comfy compare to M3. If you do a lot of tracking then m3 is more suitable.

Personally I think if you haven't owned an AMG car and there is one you like, I dont see how you'd be terribly unhappy with it. CLS is a little big for my taste but I understand the appeal. I think if I had the same relationship with my local MB dealer I have with my BMW guys, I would be driving a C63...maybe. I think owning at least 1 black AMG car (not truck) is a must. Of course this is all my opinion, and I really enjoy cars...of all kinds.

The CLS63 AMG is more of a cross with the new M5.

It is very pretty, powerful, and fun. It won't track as well as an M3, but for everything else, it would be great. Definitely my favorite non- vert AMG.

I've never driven a CLS but I just sold my 08 m3 vert and picked up an 04 E55..

I've heard the 04 E55's handle no where near the CLS AMGs, so I can't comment on that, but as far as comfort and power wise they should be quite similar. I love the E55's quiet (compared to the M) interior and you have to love that TORQUE. I usually drive in the city and I drive spiritedly maybe 10-20% of the time. Having the comfort and low end power during that 80% is wonderful.

I definitely miss darting around traffic in my M. The M was amazing with the top down on a gorgeous day but got real rough when I just wanted to drive a short distance (the roads in SF can be brutal).

Overall I'm very happy that I have my E55 simply because its FAST, comfy, and I think it looks good (doing an E63 front conversion on it ). I definitely wouldn't mind having another smaller sportier car to add to the fleet but right now the E55 is doing just fine on its own.

Well you can forget that track idea. AMGs cannot track the way BMWs can. Their G-force sensor reaches a limit point and will put the car into limp mode.

You cant really compare these two cars. One is for young successful men or active older men who have been driving their whole life. The other is for hot MILFs or older guys who are overweight and spend their retirement before they collapse of a heart attack.

This is not really a comparison. If you know how to drive, get the M3. If you have no idea what you are doing but are able to keep the wheel straight and the pedal down...get the benz.

I don't track cars at all since the closest race track is hundreds of miles away from me. I want a fast and fun car that is easy to drive quick and handles well. I drove the DCT E92 today as well and found it to handle a bi better than the cls63.

my buddy has a 2012 cls63 matt white all done up and its one sexy sexy car!

However, I feel like I would personally get bored of the car. Its a hell of a cruiser, however it just lacks the *soul* of a m3.

CLS63 out of those two for sure, but with a X5M, I'd opt something a little more sporty.

I actually prefer the E63 over the CLS.

Although I am not a Merc guy (I'm too young to be driving in a Mercedes at age 39... maybe when I'm 45+ ), I think the CLS would be a great car. I think it would be a more comfortable and faster but less "fun" car to drive than the M3. Therefore, I think it depends on what you would like... more involving and fun (M3) or more comfortable and faster (Mercedes).

Good news.... you will be driving an awesome car either way!!

I'm sure the CLS63 would be a great car but it doesn't seem to fall into the same class as an M3. The upcoming Gran Coupe ///M or M5 might be a better comparison.

It just depends on what your budget is and what is your intended purpose. If you have no desire to track, then the cls63 is a fine highway monster dressed in a Armani suit. If you want some track duty and prefer a lighter/smaller/cheaper vehicle the m3 is the way to go.

AngelinIsRich08: Just curious--how does the MCT feel compared with DCT? Based on magazine reviews, MCT got high marks but I know it is NOT a true dual clutch system.

Both are excellent transmissions in my opinion. I paddle-shifted the AMG for a couple miles and had a lot of fun but never went over 3k rpm, the same with the M3. In automatic mode I didn't really notice a difference except that the AMG felt more like a true auto as when you slowed down the torque converter didn't make it seem like it will stop too soon as is the case in the DCT. I really have to experiment more with both cars to give you a sensible review though. The CLS63 had a really awesome shifter that looked the same as the one from the SLS AMG which is almost a $300k car. Also the driving modes were Comfort, sport, sport plus, manual and RS which is for launch control I think. The car is beautiful with gadgets galore. I guess the CLS63 and M3 can be compared as a Bentley and Ferrari; the M3 is definitely more raw.

Sorry, there is absolutely no comparison in the styling/looks dept. The CLS63 AMG looks like complete ass to me.

I love manuals and natural aspiration too much to consider a new AMG, but the new CLS63 does the 1/4 in 12.0...just sayin
