Question Tire Recommendations

Hi everyone,
i live in washington DC where we have relatively mild winters with very little snow so i was thinking of getting 'all weather' tires instead of snow tires. what do you all think ? also should i get run-flat tires or a regular tire. i currently have 18-inch michelin run-flat summer tires (245/40ZR18 and 265/40ZR16)
thanks

I just recently decided to get a set of Michelin A/S 3+ tires for my new Volks. I'm in WA and in the same boat as you; relatively mild winters with little snow. Infact, my wife is from the DC area and I grew up just up the coast in NJ; my choice of tire would remain the same if I was still back on the East Coast. My car is a daily driver and sees zero track usage, so I don't anticipate ever wanting for more grip than the A/S 3+ can provide for regular or even spirited street driving. Continental DWS06 tires were my runner-up choice. I'm 100% opposed to RFT's due to how bad they are as far as NVH is concerned. Goodluck with your search!

Get a set of all season

Then find a dedicated winter set

The Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3, as others have mentioned, should be more than enough tire for a DD. I wouldn't be taking them to the track every weekend, but they're still fine for spirited driving.

It's not going to beat dedicated winter tires when there is snow, but I understand the economics of not dropping $1500+ on dedicated winter tires/wheels.

Nokian created the all-weather tire category (not to be confused with all-season) with the WRG3. You might consider looking at those? Might be a bit more expensive than the Pilot A/S, but Nokian is a very reputable tire manufacturer.

I just put a set of the new Michelin A/S 3"+" tires on last month and I'm super impressed. They are performing even better than my 3 year old P-Zeros were on the warmer days and still did great on a recent road trip to cold weather. Can't vouch for their light snow performance, but the manufacturer advertises it has 28% more traction in those conditions then their own previous A/S 3 design. And skip the run flats, you will like the ride a lot more.

Just understand an All Season tire tends to still suck in the snow.
Get snow tires for the stock wheels and a second set of wheels with some Summer performance tires. It's not hard to swap them out.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

My first set of AS3 were amazing (am in DC as well). But they wore out quickly... 15k miles granted I did use them for two weekends on the track (and they were amazing). The AS3 plus are supposed to last longer. 45k miles front and 27.5k rears.

They are years ahead of many summer tires. Plenty good for light D.C. Snow and no drama when cold. Jack of all honestly.

I do use a dedicated track setup otherwise these are my go to daily driver.

Only diff between PSS and these are that the sidewalks are a little softer. That's OK because the roads are pretty crappy.

Did buy again and very pleased.

Michelin A/S 3+

For those that have mounted the A/S 3+, the sidewall looks thicker that a PSS or DW ExtremeContact. I guess I am a little worried about it looking strange on a 19" wheel. Can anyone confirm?

+1 on the A/S 3 +. I have it mounted to my zcps and they are fine.

Some tires have a more rounded-off sidewall which tends to make it look taller. Conversely, tires with more squared-off sidewalls tend to look more rubber band-like.

I've always speculated that a more rounded-off sidewall makes the tire break away more progressively at the limits but reduces those limits slightly.

What is the point of getting a performance car if you don't run performance tires? My vote is to get summer tires and all-season or winter tires for the cold months.

Most buyers probably never get anywhere close to the cars potential. I have summer and winter wheels for all 3 cars. The Michelin pilot sport as3 are supposed to be very good for all seasons -- close to some of the summer tires.
