Kong's 2001 TiAg M3 Journal

Hey guys,

I'm just making a journal so I can keep up with everything I do. I know this is an E9X M3 forum, but I hope y'all don't mind. I bought my car from a BMW service advisor on June 6, 2013 with 73,300 miles. People here and IRL said I'd crash within a year, but I've gone almost three years without being at fault. Photos and videos will be posted from post 2 and on.

Options/mods when I bought the M3:
2001 M3 Coupe TiAg/Black
Piano black trim
Xenon headlights
Premium package
Sunroof
Cold weather package
Smoker package (why?)
Premium audio
Tint
Hard wired for a V1 radar detector
Bilstein PSS10 Coilovers
TMS camber plates.

Current mods:
Bilstein PSS10 Coilovers
TMS Camber Plates
Homemade Clutch Stop
OE LED Tail Lights
Depo Clear Bumper Reflectors
Two New Rear Bumpers
Staggered 219M Gunmetal Wheels
Rouge Engineering RSMs
Supersprint Race Exhaust
BW GroupN Motor Mounts
Rouge Engineering Trans Mounts
330i ZHP Steering Rack
E60 Shift Lever
AKG 90A RTABs
AKG 90A Subframe Bushings
AKG 95A Diff Bushings
TMS Subframe Reinforcement
Euro Tune
Schroth QFP
PFC 08 Pads Front
PFC 06 Pads Rear
HANS Sport II
Bell Sport Helmet SA2010
Motul RBF600
CPI Stepped Headers
Rear Seat Delete
Centric Slotted Rotors
UUC Clutch and Brake Pedal Bushings

Long-term mod plans:
Halo seats
Bimmerworld shifter
Coby Alcantara steering wheel
PFC DD rotors OR front BBK
Lang Racing CF Roof
Bilstein Clubsport Coilovers
Geoff Steel CSL intake
Epic Motorsports tune
CSL trunk (Vorsteiner or OE? Fitment is a big issue for me)
CSL diffuser
SGT CSL door panel inserts
SGT CSL center console
Schrick cams?
Some more weight reduction?
Half cage?

Pics the day after I got my car (all pics here were taken using an iPhone)

Made a clutch stop a week later. Shift knob a month or two later.

In October 2013, my water pump went out along with the fan blade (luckily no damage to the hood). Got it all repaired at BMW West. Two days after I got my car back, it's leaking coolant. The dealership towed it back and blamed the leaking me. Long story short, they fixed it for free but banned me from the dealership

Read all about it here
http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=457461

In December 2013, I had a great guy do a full detail for me.

Later in the month, Depo tail lights and clear reflectors from fishcake321 on eBay. Great guy, I highly recommend him. Ask nicely, and he might give you a discount. I could not get decent pics with my iPhone.

Random pic at school. My M3 looks puny next to my friend's truck.

On March 28, 2014, I get rear ended by a noob. I was at a standstill in a line waiting to leave school

I take my car to BMW Momentum Collision Center West, and of course they screw everything up as expected. It took two new bumpers, several trips, and around two months to make it right.

First bumper

Read more about it here:

In early April 2014, I installed AP headers (first of my three header installs on this car lol). Yes I raised the car more later on.

Second day in

And this. PS leak that I still haven't addressed to this day.

Getting ready to install all this for 2014-15 Christmas break project.

AKG RTABs
OE FCABs
BW GroupN Motor Mounts
Rouge Trans Mounts
330i ZHP Steering Rack
Steering Coupler
Steering Coupler Head Bolt
Oil Pan Gasket
Oil Pan Gasket Bolts
E60 Shift Lever
Shifter Rebuild Kit
OEM Guibo
Guibo Self-Lock Nut
Center Support
CSB Flange Nut
Driveshaft Washer Gasket
Washer Gasket Cover
Differential Pinion Seal
Updated Diff Torx Bolts
Diff Front Mounting Bolt
AKG Diff Bushings
Diff Carrier Hex Bolt
Diff Securing Plate
TMS Subframe Reinforcement
AKG Subframe Bushings
3M 08115 Epoxy
Reinforcement Plate Bolts
Castrol TWS Motor Oil
Oil Filter Kit
Oil Drain Plug
75W-80 MTF2 Trans Fluid
ECS Differential Fluid Kit
Ford Diff Friction Modifier
Exhaust Hangars
Tie Rod Nuts
Motor Mount Nuts

I got the car back down on January 3.

I did not install the oil pan gasket and diff pinion seal because they were not leaking (this is why I won't take my car to any shop anymore). Thanks to ThunderMoose for convincing me that I could DIY everything, and actually coming over to help me get started. And thanks to the guys who encouraged me along the way.

No power steering because I thought the reservoir was full, but during test drive it emptied. Didn't have any more fluid so had to get more the next morning. Barely made it to the end of the driveway lol. Much different than any other shoulder workout I've done.

Misc. photos from project.

Refused to come off. First time I used a torch, on this thing - success.

Broke this plastic piece trying to remove which isn't sold separately. Paid $25 for another one at a junk yard...

Alignment

Side markers replaced with new ones.

Grills/gills plastidipped black

Interior parts refresh

Prepping car for first track event. July 2015 TWS PDS

Track videos

Switched to OE LED tail lights.

Battery died on me. First time my car failed me. 08/14/2015

http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08...5db59a297b.jpg

08/18/2015 Headers round 2, went with OE Euro.

Old headers out in four hours. Much faster than my first time.

But wait! The reason why I went with OE headers was to avoid fitment issues like this.

Oil pan gasket leak that I'll probably address this summer.

Fukme

09/30/2015 Bought SA2010 Bell Sport Helmet, HANS device, and gloves.

10/15/2015 Installed Schroth Quick Fit harnesses.

11/01/2015 Installed PFC 08 pads in the front.

11/21/2015 First Autocross event, with NTAXS in DFW.

11/29/2015 Oil change with Castrol TWS and OE filter.

12/18/2015 PFC 06 brake pad install in rear.

12/20/2015 Headers round 3 - New CPI stepped because I did not want to deal with any more fitment issues.

Monitoring oil pan gasket and PS line leaks.

Blackstone report came in same day.

Finished installing headers on the 24th and headed to BMW dealership that night to align car and have brakes re-bled in preparation for a track event. Decided to try muffler delete on the way there (30 min drive). Terrible idea.

01/06/2016 Replaced front rotors with OE.
01/09-10/2016 TWS PDS track event

Day 1, Session 3 (out of 4). Still using traction control.

Day 2, Session. TC off.

Day 2, Check ride to move from green to blue group.

01/23/2015 Autocross at COTA. Still trying to figure out how to recover from a spin. I was able to stay about a second behind a 650S and Exige, so I think I did pretty good.

The photographers took more photos of my car than the McLaren.

02/06/2016 Pick up 8 free R-comps. BFG R1s that will only be used for autocross/skid recovery practice.

Trying to diagnose fitment issues.

Raising front ride height to 13.5" and alignment.
-3.0* and 0.0 toe front
-1.8* and 0.30* toe in rear
No more fitment issues

Autocross event with them. No grip because the way the event is run, I was not able to warm up my tires.

Met a fellow M3 owner who was doing a DE at COTA. This is when I decide I want Apex ARC-8s

During spring break, pretty much removed everything in the rear (becauseracecar) which took off around 70 lbs. Also installed slotted rotors which I didn't take photos of.
Don't have post-cleanup photos.

Very nice journal, I used to see your posts on M3forum when I had my e46 M3 and frequently visited there. I have much respect for someone who does all that work on his own. I'm looking forward to seeing more progression of your M.

Thank guys!

I had no previous experience working on cars, but learning to work on the M3 is easy. My first DIY job was headers, which is one of the harder things to do on this car.

Thanks. M3F is a great resource for DIYing. Couldn't have done it without the help of the forum.

I don't see myself doing more to the car this year, other than seats, wheels (currently trying to sell 219Ms and replace with Apex ARC-8), maintenance, and track/autocross.

I was initially going to do cosmetic rather than track-oriented mods, but that changed after my first event. Had plans for CSL trunk, diffuser, and front bumper and actually bought a trunk. Sold the trunk a month after purchasing to fund track stuff lol. I'll probably look into buying another trunk after I install seats and CF roof as part of my weight loss plan.

Rofl. I'm of Pakistani descent and tan really easily (unfortunately). Not sure if I told you that previously.

Nice man, thanks for sharing! I just picked up a TiAg 2006 E46 M3 Vert a couple months ago my wife and I are sharing as our "fun car". Been super addicted to modding and driving it! It's a great car to drive and the best part is modding it isn't as expensive as the E9X!

Congrats on the lolvert. I'd like to add an E46 vert to my collection.. Or E90/92 M3. In addition to being fairly cheap to mod and maintain (I'm actually about to surpass the purchase price of the car lol), it's pretty easy to work on.

Thanks! What you don't see in the photos is a dent on the left A pillar and front bumper covered in rock chips and one scratched lip. Haven't gotten around to getting the dent fixed, and replacing bumper seems like a waste considering that it'll get rock chips due to frequent DEs. Then there's the oil pan gasket leak (damn you BMW stealership) and PS line leak that I'll need to address this summer. Besides those, I agree that it's been taken care of fairly well. With me trying to complete my premed courses in addition to volunteering here (in Austin) it's hard to find time to go back home to Houston and DIY in the garage unfortunately. I'll keep thread updated with my slow progress.

Did autocross at COTA today with Edge Addicts. I think this is the most enjoyable course I've run to date. The other two courses I've done at COTA were pretty shitty.

I'd washed the car on Saturday, and made it look great, and now it's kinda dirty again. :/

Didn't want to set parking brake with hot brakes, so I used the concrete-grass transition as my wheel chock.
