Complaint for Speeding

I got a nice surprise in the mail today. I got a complaint that I had to come into the police station to talk to an officer about a potential 15+ mph speeding ticket. No information at all on the request, not even date of incident or where the incident occurred. Again it wasn't a ticket. but a complaint asking me to come in and speak to an officer. It has been roughly 4 weeks since I last drove my M3, I don't think my winter beater is capable of speeding. I was never pulled over , chances are I wasn't radared as I have a V1 and would have noticed. I'm assuming someone would of had to call my car in, Milwaukee doesn't have cameras to catch speeders like Chicago does. So is this a case where I show up and say I wasn't driving, (could be true as my buddy and my dad all have driven my car multiple times during last two months), no one pulled me over, no radar reading, cop gives up and lets me go on my way.

Bizarre. Just my personal preference but if it is that important to them they'll come to you at which point I'd say nothing without more specificity on their part and even then I'd say nothing.

I would not ignore, because ignoring may be a crime itself. Probably someone filed a complaint with your tag.

That's weird as shit. I don't think New York has that. If you say no, I don't see how they can do anything at all as there's literally 0 proof.

Just go in and let them talk to you. Someone filed a complaint and this is how they address it, if you show up they'll probably just talk to you and do nothing, but they'll remember that you showed up and it will help you the next time you are speeding.

They have absolutely no legal standing on this whatsoever. It's more of a warning type situation and intimidation to get you to slow down.

That said, I would go simply because it goes on your record for future issues if you chose to fight them, it could help.

Just listen, don't say much, speak in generalities and be non-committal and move on.

+1.

Answer their questions, don't divulge anything, don't apologize.

Throw it in the trash. I'm amazed that the adult forum members here find any interest in going to a police station at the request of a piece of paper. That is ASININE! How did they know your speed? If it was 15+ they would've given you a ticket when it occurred. This is silly.

Actually I consider it the "adult" thing to do. Obviously you don't have to go, but it could make a difference in the court record if you voluntarily appeared if you chose to fight a ticket in the future.

Likely they got a complaint about him from another citizen and apparently that is their policy to contact the person. Typically just the contact or meeting will do a lot to deter those actions in the future for most people psychologically.

It's a common tactic in law enforcement. There's a lot of people that would be intimidated by something like that and that's what they're counting on.

Personally I would enjoy speaking to them and smiling in their face while giving them absolutely nothing but a big FU in polite terms. But that's just me.

Ask yourself this..how can they prove whether or not he ever got the letter? Mail gets lost all the time. Without someone knocking on his door and "serving" him with an official notice, they can't legally do anything if he takes that letter and puts it through the shredder.

This was a huge thing in Arizona a few years back. The state decided it was a good idea to waste several million dollars of taxpayers money to install speed cameras all over the highways. The tickets didn't give you points on your license, they just wanted your money. It was nothing but a huge scam to raise money.

It lasted a month before people realized there was a severe loophole in the camera system. When you received the ticket in the mail, if you put it in the trash, there was nothing they could do to you. They cannot legally hold you accountable for something they cannot even prove you received or were otherwise notified about. After 3 months, the ticket went away like it never happened. So they ended up wasting more tax payers money by paying an official courier to "serve" people in person at their doors when they failed to pay the ticket within 30 days. This cost the courts money, and there was no way they could afford to serve everyone that didn't pay up, plus all you had to do was not answer your door, and again, they can't legally hold you accountable.

The cameras lasted a year before they took them down. Giant waste of money. Epic fail. Good job Arizona.

So I ask again, the police department sent you a letter saying that someone reported you were speeding and they want to talk to you about it? A cop didn't see it, they have no photographic proof accompanied by radar, so why worry about it? Throw that shit in the trash and go about your business. If it's that important, they will come find you.

I agree with you on this one. I'd wait for a 2nd notice and then ... MAYBE, call. If a cop didn't see you speed, you didn't speed.

Finally, some common sense around here. The other posts are laughable at best. Police departments don't do this period!

Also good point about registered mail verus reg mail and the red light cameras. Pretty smart..

I'm guessing someone called me in or an off duty officer saw me. Weird thing is that I got it in the mail yesterday and the date of meeting is today. From what I'm hearing I might as well blow it off , but I'll probably show after work

If it is not a summons or a ticket, throw that away. That's pure trolling.

A thought: Maybe someone in the area observed/reported a late model M3 tearing through a local area/neighborhood (perhaps more than once). As a result, someone performed a search of the M3's registered in the area. The search yielded only a few matching the make, model, color?, etc. They then sent open letters to each address, asking someone to come in and turn themselves in.

Either that, or a neighbor reported you.

In any case, I would agree with those who say they have no _real_ evidence on you. And, going in to the department will likely only give them information they lack.

A cop needs to chime in here…
