Debatable maybe. But it also looks like it could be a Hertz rental car. It may be a bit shouty-er or boy-racer-ish in some ways but also less expensive than the M3. But my point was not that the M3 is less flashy than the Mustang. My point is that the M3 and Mustang are both less flashy than a 911. In simple colors (black, silver, gray) the M3 looks like any 3 series to most people and the Mustang GT looks like a any other Mustang V6. Either car could be worth <$30K to the average Joe.

On the other hand, a Porsche 911, while by no means an exotic, triggers more notice by the average non-car-person.

The reason I had originally picked the Mustang over the M3 was to be able to treat it like crap and not care. But it turns out, I just didn't enjoy it enough. I'd rather have the M3 and deal with the concerns over street parking, road salt, dings and wear and tear. It's still worth it.

I did. Sad, but it wasn't the right car for me.. Too big, too heavy, gets horrible mileage for no good reason, too much power for DD (can't go full throttle, can't redline)... So I thought what's the point? I do track my cars, and tracking M3 is very expensive as well. The power is good at the track, but not the weight..

So I decided to split the M3's personality. I now have a MINI Cooper S as a DD, and sometime in the future I'll buy a track car. Porsche 944 seems to be the best candidate. In the mean time, I'm tracking the MINI, and I have to say I'm glad with this decision. I've heard this from many instructors as well: M3 is a wrong car to learn HPD.

I don't think anyone wants to make a 60K mistake. Most people do their research on the cars before pulling the trigger I would hope. The M3 would be a really expensive regret.

I had a 2010 E92 M3 for all of two months, but couldn't handle the maintenance of the black paint. Realizing that I'm far too neurotic for jet black I put the car up on LeaseTrader and ordered a 2011 E92 M3 in Silverstone.... I'm much happier now

I bought an E90 M3 because I needed four doors. I haven't regretted one day of it thus far. Then again, I'm an M3 nut...

As far as the general public appears to be concerned, the M3 might as well be a Camry compared to a Mustang, let alone a GT. I'd also argue a GT turns a good bit more heads than a 911. It's a much louder (in a parking lot), attention getting, look-at-me car than either a 911 or a M3.
Maybe it's a regional thing. I don't know how east or west you are in PA but here in firmly Midwest Ohio, there are tons of mustangs and the vast majority are base model V6s driven by non enthusiasts (my assistant drives one). Other than loud, heavily modified GT500s, mustangs certainly do not raise eyebrows. On the other hand there are parts of the country (los Angeles, NY area, etc) where BMWs and Porsches blend in a lot more. Out here, sadly, a 911 is fairly noticeable. What I'd really like is something that performs like a Ferrari 458 but looks to passersby like a Civic.

I'm in a situation right now where I'm deciding what to do with my M3 as my wife is now pregnant with our 2nd child. She has a 323i (equivalent to a 328i in the US). I really like the X5 which would be suitable for us. The question is, do I sell my M3 or her 323i?

I sometimes wish I had got a GTR instead as that fits my lifestyle and track/hard core performance mental orientation better... but i am very happy with the M3... eventually though, I see myself in a GTR.. just a matter of time.

I've been on several cars including the E46 M and now the E92- love 'em to bits! Regrets? Only that I couldn't afford them sooner!

In Australia, we have the 320i as the base model which uses the inline 4 cyl 2.0L engine. The next one up here is the 323i which uses the N54 engine, a 2.5L 6 cyl. Your equivalent is a 3.0L 6 cyl which is the 328i.

Has to be the 323 to go surely....!

PS - Don't you every time you read about M3's costing $60-70k US in these posts... very depressing. $170k+ here in Oz!

if you had people wanting to take pictures with a mustang daily, you need to move out of the boonies... i'm not even going to address the ridiculousness of the 911 comment...

i had a mustang gt for over a year before selling it and buying the m3, and i had maybe three or four people even look twice at it, and those time were because of the red leather interior that made it stick out.

BMW, regardless of the model, garners more attention than a Mustang.

I can't speak for a "regular" Mustang but in 2006 and 2007 I rented Shelby GTH Musangs from Hertz. I have never been in a car that attracted that much attention. In 2006 we were staying at the Ritz Carlton Beach Club in Naples Florida. There was someone else staying there who had an identical Hertz GTH rental (they were all black with gold stripes). The valets would park the two of them next to each other in front of the main entrance. Whether there was one or two of them parked in front they always attracted a lot of attention, There were a lot of nice cars coming in and out including Bentleys, Ferraris, etc. but it was the two Hertz Shelbys that attracted the most attention. People waved at me at lights, came up to me in parking lots and I even had a Fort Lauderdale police officer come up to me to talk about the car. He was a huge Mustang fan and had a Shelby of his own.

Go figure!

Not to take the wind out of anyones sails but in my experience most people do not know what an M3 is and see it as another BMW in a sea of BMWs. The same could be said about AMG Mercedes vs a "regular: Mercedes.

Changing the front and rear bumpers, adding a dome to the hood and putting on different rims does not make the care look significantly different to most people. To be perfectly honest sometimes I have to look twice myself to see if it is an M or a regular 3 and I know what the visual cues are.

But to get back on topic I do not know any M3 owners who regret buying it.

I regretted not purchasing one sooner.

Amongst car enthusiast and people who generally know a bit about cars, the M3 does garner attention. For those who aren't into these sort of things, I don't think it really matters if they notice it or not. From personal experience, my car is a head-turner. People regularly break their necks to get a look, give me a thumbs up, or ask about it.

I've attracted way more dudes than chicks in this car. Unless the girl is awesome and knows a thing or two about cars, she just sees BMW and doesn't notice the difference. More dudes know what the ///M is and flock to it to ask questions and all that. I don't really care either way, because I didn't get it to impress people, I got it for fun, and boy is this car fun

No regrets here!

I suppose it depends on where you live. A few weeks ago there was a really nice Aston Martin parked in front of my building. I stood and watched it for about 10 minutes. A few people glanced at it but most people walked right by and paid no attention to it whatsoever. I saw a similar reponse (or lack thereof) to a Maserati GT parked on West 56th street a while ago. They certainly got my attention but I guess the average man on the street in Manhattan is not that into cars.
