I think it is a great idea. Instead of raising taxes on everyone lets just get more money from the people that get caught. I read another article about all these other departments across the country calling into this department seeing what red tape they went through to be able to do that. So this will no doubt spread across the country.

Living in Chicago I would be more worried about this http://cbs2chicago.com/local/cook.co....2.760949.html Sales tax just went to 10.25% OUCH!! I'm so glad I moved.

the answer is not to charge people but they should find solution at the source. I constantly see police abusing their cars (either speeding or running red lights...etc).

They should consider getting those taxi meters while they're at it. Start billing once they go after you.

I love it! It's like a user consumption tax. Rather than a flat tax that everyone pays, tax the consumption of goods. If you want to speed, you pay higher tickets prices and the expenses incurred by the police to enforce it. If you want to play, you gotta pay!

It's funny when people get upset that they have to pay fines for doing something ILLEGAL!!

It's just a hike in fines that they justify by fuel cost, not really anything special.

Who said I'm a "Johnny do-good"? All I'm saying is that if I want to mess around, break the law, and have fun then I gotta be willing to pay the fine. If "bad things" didn't happen to people when they broke the law, why have laws at all?

Do whatever the heck you'd like on public streets! Kill a couple of kids, run over a dog or 2... whatever... but when the police come calling, bend over and take it like a man.

Not just their fuel costs went up, but everybodys. Writing tickets for moving violation is only about 10-20% of their daily task unless the officer is assigned to traffic duty specifically rest of the time it is patrolling the streets for crime. Does the fire department add a fuel surcharge to come to a house fire or an accident scene?

I have an idea, stay in a cop house and I will call you when I need you. Here is another idea get more fuel efficient cars that get 20+ MPG in the city not 15 mpg that the Crown Vics get. I know that the first one is not very feasible but number two could be implemented within few years since most police departments replace some of their fleed every few years.

It will save Police departments a lot of fuel

As much as I hate speeding tickets, I can understand this fuel surcharge.

Shhhh, don't give them anymore ideas!

I agree, it's total BS taking advantage of the situation. You can always justify shit if you wear a badge. It's still "we the people" right????????????

So as gas prices go up the result of that would be less drivers. Less drivers means less revenue collecting so I guess another hike is in order when the population doesn't cause as many infractions as the city council would like. So that means make more laws to make everyone a criminal.
