Rolf-Dieter: this is a fabulous thread, man. Sincerely. Your opening statement was "regardless of what transmission..." Then there are all these great responses and then you post "perhaps we need to separate..."

No need to separate brutha!! You might want more brake dust info in this thread, but look what you got! A F**king love song to the joy of shifting gears. With BOTH awesome transmissions. Like the title of THIS THREAD! Enjoy. And go burn some petrol. We all love it too!!

I'm fairly new to manual (about a year), so I force myself to downshift every time (except for in neighborhoods at night--I hate it when some jerk races by my house when I'm sleeping) for the practice. For those that don't do it--claiming premature clutch wear--do you just coast to a stop or around a turn then? I'm asking because I used to do that, but then I was taught that it's unsafe to not be in gear while moving.

Heel toeing on a downshift is addicting and i do it every single time. I dont downshift unless i rev match when braking or when not. Its much smoother on the car since there is no herky jerky going on.

Oh I meant rev-matching downshifting. I don't know how anyone would do it otherwise. Just throw it in there? Wait for the revs to drop so low that a non-matched downshift wouldn't jerk the car?

Love rev match downshifts... even do it to first sometimes. Sounds heavenly with the Akra.

The catless downshifts at 14-20 secs and 54 secs and up in this vid are epic sounding too...

I will say that the DCT downshifts (and upshifts) definitely sound cooler than the ones our 6MT's make..

Sounds fantastic, but...

:flamesuit:

I can't help myself from making a connection between pulling the paddle and hitting the YouTube play button. Both are requesting a computer to do something and, in turn, there is noise... The immediacy of the shifts must be absolutely addicting, though. I couldn't get enough of listening to the cars gear down for tight corners at the USGP in Austin.

Sorry Rolf, not trying to get this thread off track. Please continue celebrating transmission diversity (minus those lazy-ass slushboxes - go back to where you came from!). Canada - who know? "The first automatic transmission was invented in 1921 by Alfred Horner Munro of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada."

Back on topic...

This past weekend I was in downshift heaven, clutch in and stabbing the throttle to grab third gear when the curvy signs said 25 mph or less. Need to work on my heel-toe to get second when they read 10!!!

I love downshifting and breaking necks. The sound that comes out of the M3 is beyond amazing and addicting!

Downshift all day long...no radio needed, the only music is listening to the
M Performance Exhaust sounds...DCT-rev matching is great...

I also downshift all day long on my F10 M5 6MT and my S2K 6MT...

Shifting up and down is the only way to drive, and enjoy life while doing it...

I've always downshifted to slow down, and never had a clutch go on me in any of my cars (even ones I kept for over 5 years). Never considered it to add significant wear, especially compared to how hard some launches can be on the clutch.

As for the M3, the DCT downshifting sound on S5/6 is fantastic, especially with a Gintani exhaust Sometimes feel like I'm riding a super bike when coming to a stop, and it turns heads all the time.
